King Charles’ absence from a celebration closely tied to his royal duties has reportedly raised fresh questions about how much he plans to take on publicly.
The 77-year-old monarch was expected at a major Royal Ballet School milestone, but another member of the royal family took his place.
According to reports, the unexpected change prompted concerns among royal insiders that some of his previously arranged engagements could be quietly reassigned.

As Page Six reported, the Royal Ballet School’s centenary celebrations brought together prominent figures from politics and the arts, but King Charles was notably missing despite serving as the institution’s official patron.
The festivities included a reception and performances at the Royal Opera House on Thursday, October 8, followed by a black-tie gala dinner at Whitehall Palace on Friday, October 9. Former Prime Minister Sir John Major was among those attending.
Representing the Crown was Lady Sarah Chatto, daughter of Princess Margaret and president of both the Royal Ballet School and Birmingham Royal Ballet.
Her appearance ensured the royal family was represented at the milestone event, even without the monarch.
The outlet revealed that Charles’ absence unsettled some members of London society, particularly because they expected him to attend.

Questions about King Charles’ absence have extended beyond the ballet celebrations, with royal insiders reportedly suggesting his official schedule could be reduced.
Although the monarch has maintained a public presence this year, attending the Zoological Society of London’s 200th anniversary on July 9 and undertaking official trips to Washington, DC, and Bermuda in early May, sources told Page Six that some engagements arranged months earlier were being reconsidered.
According to the publication, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Kate and other members of the royal family could take on appearances originally assigned to Charles.

King Charles’ royal workload has attracted attention amid questions about his health, but his autumn commitments suggest that he is still expected to shoulder significant responsibilities.
Last month, The Blast reported that the monarch had several major engagements planned, including hosting Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tarik at Windsor Castle from October 20 through October 22.
The diplomatic visit will be followed by an overseas tour beginning October 27, with Charles and Queen Camilla expected to visit Antigua and Barbuda and attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
Charles’ workload also comes as other senior royals continue taking on visible responsibilities. Princess Kate has gradually returned to public engagements after preventative chemotherapy, while Prince William continues to appear alongside her.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not left out as the debate over royal duties intensifies.
According to The Blast, their appearances at several charitable organizations during a recent visit to Nottingham renewed questions about how their independent public activities were being perceived after they stepped away from official royal responsibilities.
However, royal commentator Kinsey Schofield revealed that there was frustration inside Buckingham Palace over the Sussexes’ public presentation.
“It’s royal theater without royal authority,” Schofield said, while broadcaster Helena Chard described the appearances as a “pseudo royal reboot.”
The outlet also stated that the situation presented a challenge for Charles, who had to maintain the distinction between working royals and relatives pursuing independent activities.
Schofield argued that the Sussexes’ continued use of their royal titles and international recognition complicated the issue.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle planned a joint visit to Nottingham on October 15, bringing them together for a series of charitable engagements outside their former official royal roles.
The Blast reported that the visit was expected to include three organizations supporting young people and vulnerable communities, including a youth music studio, a food bank and a mentoring organization.
The couple was scheduled to visit Community Recording Studio in St Ann’s, Himmah Hub and Food Bank in Hyson Green, and Epic Partners in Sneinton.
The Community Recording Studio had previously received significant support from Harry, who announced a £1.1 million ($1.4 million) donation to BBC Children in Need in September 2025 to support the organization’s redevelopment and youth programs. Harry had also visited the studio in 2013.
Their planned appearance followed a September letter from the Lord Chamberlain, authorized by King Charles, which clarified the couple’s position within the royal family.
The letter explained that Harry and Meghan were no longer working members of the monarchy and that their charitable activities were undertaken privately.
“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” the letter stated. It also described their position as “akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”
