Emma Watson has opened up about her views on marriage after famously describing herself as ‘self-partnered’.
The Harry Potter star went viral back in 2019 after referring to herself as ‘self-partnered’ when asked if she had a someone special in her life by Vogue, saying: “It took me a long time, but I’m very happy [being single]. I call it being self-partnered.”
Watson’s turn of phrase of course hit the internet like gasoline on a fire, with people scrambling to dissect exactly what self-partnered means.
The 35-year-old would later clarify her comments, saying the term was borne out of a way to explain the ‘sudden anxiety and pressure’ she felt about being a woman in her 30s.
“In the run-up to my 30s, [I felt] this incredible, sudden anxiety and pressure that I had to be married or have a baby or [be] moving into a house,” she told Teen Vogue.

“There was no word for this kind of subliminal messaging and anxiety and pressure that I felt building up but couldn’t really name, so I used the word self-partnered.”
The Little Woman star has now opened up about her romantic life once again in a new podcast interview, telling author Jay Shetty that if she’d gotten married ‘at any point’ before a year ago ‘it would’ve been carnage’ for her and her hypothetical spouse.
“I’m just so happy not to be divorced yet,” she revealed, adding: “That sounds like a really negative answer but I think we’re being pressured and forced into this thing that I believe is a kind or miracle. I might never be worthy of it.
“I hope it happens to me but I don’t feel entitled to it. It will either be part of purpose here and my destiny or it won’t,” Watson continued.
“I think the way we treat it [marriage] as though ‘why haven’t you’ and ‘this is something that has to happen in this certain timespan is the least romantic thing I can think of.”

While Watson gave little about her current romantic life away she did reveal what the ideal partner would be for her.
“I tried to be clear with myself what it was I was really looking for and what I want,” the actor explained. “I really want to be with someone I can learn from and I hope has the humility to be able to learn from me.
“I guess my big hope or wish would be that I met someone who feels that what I’m here to do in the world is important to them too.”
