Actor Chad Lowe and his wife Kim Painter are grieving the loss of their 13-year-old daughter Fiona, the family confirmed on Tuesday.

Sharing a statement with PEOPLE, the family paid tribute to Fiona: “We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona. She was a loving young girl who was smart, creative and loved to dance. She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives.”

Lowe, the younger brother of actor Rob Lowe, is best known for his Emmy-winning turn as Jesse McKenna on Life Goes On. He and Painter married in 2010, and welcomed Fiona — their second daughter — on November 15, 2012. Their eldest, Mabel, arrived in 2009, followed by their youngest, Nixie, in 2016.

Lowe has long used social media to celebrate milestones with his family. Marking Fiona’s 13th birthday last November, he wrote: “Celebrating Fiona officially becoming a teen today!! Keep dancing through life FiBear! Love you soooo much!!”

Earlier this year, in February, he shared a more sombre post — a photo of his three daughters standing arm in arm, surveying what remained of their Los Angeles home after it was destroyed in January’s Palisades Fire.

He wrote in an Instagram post at the time, “Almost a month after we evacuated our girls finally got to go back to see what’s left of their home.” He added, “The way they’ve handled this whole devastating experience is nothing short of remarkable. I am in awe of their spirit and resilience. Helping them navigate these tough times is my sole purpose. Being their dad is my life’s greatest joy and privilege ⭐️⭐️⭐️.”

Beyond Life Goes On, Lowe has built a decades-long career with roles in Pretty Little Liars, Melrose Place, 24, Supergirl and 9-1-1: Lone Star. Painter works as a film and television producer.
