If the people at Lionsgate and Universal International ever needed an excuse to smash a car and scream “Hooooo” in celebration, they have one. Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, has moonwalked past the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. Lionsgate, which distributes the film domestically and in partnership with Kino Films in Japan, and Universal Pictures International, which distributes the film in most other international markets, today announced that it has grossed $1.001 billion at the worldwide box office through Sunday — $371.8 million domestically and $629.8 million internationally.

Where is all the money coming from?

According to today’s press release, the film has rewritten the record books: Michael is Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film ever at the worldwide box office and its first film to reach the billion-dollar mark globally. Michael is Universal’s second $1B film in 2026. During its extraordinary run, the film set records in 31 territories as a biopic and in another 55 as a musical biopic.  In Japan, where Kino Films is distributing the film in association with Lionsgate, Michael has taken in $35.75 million, pushing the blockbuster over the billion-dollar mark worldwide.  It is the highest-grossing biopic of all time worldwide and the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, outgrossing Graham King’s Academy Award-nominated biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

Fuqua responds to Michael‘s success

“Reaching this extraordinary $1 billion milestone with Michael is a deeply humbling moment that celebrates the tireless dedication of our incredible producers, cast, crew, and partners,” said director Antoine Fuqua.  “This achievement belongs to everyone who came together with a shared vision to honor one of the greatest artists the world has ever known. I am profoundly grateful to the audiences around the globe who embraced this film, showed up in theaters, and connected with this story across generations and cultures. This historic milestone is a testament to the enduring power of cinema to bring us together, and it is a chapter in movie history I will never forget.”

Are you one of the many millions who’ve seen Michael? My family keeps pestering me to see the film in theaters, but I’m waiting for a digital release, and even then, we’ll see. It’s awesome that so many people are enjoying Fuqua’s biopic honoring the King of Pop, especially after the project encountered so many stop gaps on its way to the silver screen.

A Michael sequel is ready to spill blood on the dancefloor

In May, Lionsgate Studios Motion Picture Chair Adam Fogelson teased that the studio is hard at work on a sequel to Fuqua’s impactful film, saying, “Lionsgate is really excited about the progress we’re making” on the Michael sequel. “All the conversations that we’ve been having with all of the appropriate parties continue to go exceptionally well,” he said, “and I would say that there is a ton of incredibly entertaining Michael Jackson story, and much of the biggest and most popular parts of his music catalog that were not touched upon in the first film.”

He continued, “We can go forwards and backwards in telling this story. There are so many other events that happened, even in the time frame of the original movie, that weren’t touched upon. So we’re very, very confident that we’ve got an incredibly entertaining movie that will appeal once again to a global audience as the pieces come together.”

Are you looking forward to the continuation of Fuqua’s biopic? Which parts of Jackson’s life will the sequel depict? We’ll bring you more details as soon as we know the score.
