Back in the early 90s, I made friends with an astrologer through an astrology mailing list—oh, the good old days of the internet! This gal was a double Gemini, brimming with intellectual insights and communication skills that could make you swoon. So, when she dropped the bombshell that she was giving up consulting, I had to ask—what gives? As she explained, the clients were just too intense. I could totally relate; Pluto was hanging out in Scorpio at the time, and the vibe was heavy with themes of trauma and loss. Back in the early 90’s I was friendly with an astrologer I met via an astrology mailing list. She was a super intellectual (double Gemini). Her insights were unique and her ability to communicate was singular. I was surprised when she told me she was giving up consulting. Why?
She explained the clients were too intense and I understood immediately. Pluto was in Scorpio at time. This gal was active with Pluto in Libra. Astrology was in it’s heyday at that time. Pop psychology. “I’m okay, You’re okay.” Hippie era. Astrology was light and fun, but this had changed.
With Pluto in Scorpio, death entered the chat. AIDS. Incest. Trauma. Loss. These things weighed on her as you may imagine. Consequently, she cut the rope.
Who could blame her? No! Don’t go. Stay and suffer! That’s ridiculous. With a packed 8th house, I was entirely comfortable with Pluto in Scorpio. I felt her pass a mantle to me at that time. She helped me see how well I aligned with the times.
In 1995, Pluto entered Sagittarius. We were now dealing with people worldwide, via the internet. This required a massive adjustment. Specifically, an astrologer had to educate themselves around other people’s cultures and core beliefs. As far as I’m concerned, this was mandatory and I’ll offer an example.
With Pluto in Libra, divorce became a thing in the United States. With Pluto in Scorpio, nasty divorce became a thing. But other cultures did not follow suit here. Consequently, an astrologer had to expand their worldview in order to be effective when working with people, worldwide. There was great power in being mutable and able to shift gears and see things from various perspectives at that time.
Pluto in Capricorn was harsh. Corruption. Wipeout of the family for many. Collective depression. The structures that support life, rotted and then collapsed. These years were all about trying to live in the light in a dark place. But the walls keep closing in. Healing was possible, but the path was slow and arduous. An astrologer had to work with people under tremendous pressure, while maintaining their integrity, make sure not to overpromise.
So now we’ve got Pluto in Aquarius. Today an astrologer is working with people, forced to reinvent themselves. The sun (Leo) rules a person’s vocation. Pluto wipes it and then what? Today’s astrologer needs grit, a superior intellect, optimism, massive creativity and a visionary open mind.
A family friend read my chart via a ephemeris, at the kitchen table when I was twelve years old. That woman was special. I think she could handle this job today, but there is no denying it’s changed. That said, with Uranus in Gemini we’re circling back to where astrology is thinker’s game. It’s similar to when Pluto in Libra, with higher stakes.
