Ricky Hatton’s ex-girlfriend, Claire Sweeney, has paid tribute to the late boxer in a heartfelt social media post.
Stockport-born Hatton was found dead at his Hyde home on Sunday (14 September), though Greater Manchester Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.
The British sporting icon, known as ‘The Hitman’, boasted a legendary record of 45 wins from 48 bouts, with 32 coming via knockout in an outstanding 15-year career which ended in 2012.
Hatton was just 46 when he passed away, with the boxer training for a sensational comeback fight in Dubai later this year as fans anticipated his return through social media.
Unfortunately, that day will never come, as The Hitman’s family released an emotional statement following the tragic news.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son Richard,” they wrote, adding: “Richard was so much more than a world champion. To us he was simply ‘Richard’, our son. A loving father, grandfather, and brother, and a true friend to many.”
They praised his kindness, humour, and heart, among other things, and concluded the statement by saying: “He inspired generations with his fighting spirit, his humility, and his love for the sport.”
Now, his ex-girlfriend Claire Sweeney has shared a touching tribute, taking to Instagram to write a personal message about the late Hatton alongside a heartfelt video.
She posted a video montage of her ex on the platform to the soundtrack of ‘If I Can Dream’ by Elvis Presley.
The Coronation Street actress wrote in the caption: “I’ve needed a few days to process the devastating news about my dear friend Ricky.”
Sweeney continued: “My thoughts are with his family especially his children Campbell, Millie Fearne and Lyla, his granddaughter. To them, Speaky and to all his friends who loved him so deeply and for so many years I send you my deepest sympathy.
“Ricky, you were the people’s champ. We adored and cherished you. Love you always.”
‘Speaky’ refers to Hatton’s long-time manager, Paul Speak, who was reported to have found his body at the Hyde home on Sunday morning.
Sweeney and Hatton started their romance after spending time together on Dancing on Ice last year and despite things not working out following several months of dating, the pair stayed good friends.

Hatton was sharing his fitness journey with fans prior to his death, ahead of his planned bout against Eisa Al Dah, 46, in a middleweight face-off in Dubai in just three months’ time.
In a post on social media on 12 September, he shared a video of himself working the treadmill while drenched in sweat, writing: “Evening run in the bag. Don’t your worry about that our kid.”
