Have you ever felt like the universe has a sense of irony? Well, in today’s gaming realm, as Venus retrogrades through the fiery sign of Leo, we can’t help but notice a cosmic twist that calls for reflection on the good ol’ days of video games. Just like how Leo loves to bask in the spotlight, video games are fighting for their moment amidst the chaos of AI trends, pricing madness, and an audience that seems blissfully unaware of the golden era we once enjoyed. Growing up, I spent countless hours in roller-skating arcades—my mom was a semi-pro skater, so I had the best “crash course” in gaming there could be! But as I watched the industry drift into disarray, it got me pondering: which titles truly laid the groundwork for everything we play today? Join me as I dig up the most influential games that shaped this beautiful chaos we call the gaming industry. Are you ready to take a nostalgic journey with me? LEARN MORE

Steve

I don’t know how closely you follow the world of video games, but that corner of the entertainment industry is drowning right now. From rising RAM costs due to AI oversaturation to trend-chasing and audiences who don’t know how good they have it, the beloved hobby is a dumpster fire of miscalculations and discontent. Gaming wasn’t always like this. I grew up in roller-skating rink arcades (quite literally, my mom was a semi-professional skater), and I’ve been gaming at home since the Atari 2600, Intellivision, and ColecoVision era. My history doesn’t make me an authority on anything, but it does provide a bit of perspective.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been posting Top 10 Games lists for various consoles, including NES, Sega Genesis, SNES, Game Boy, N64, PS1, PS2, and Xbox. It’s been fun, but it also makes me think, where do some of the best games in this hobby come from? What games are truly “foundational?” So, this week, I’m doing my best to compile a list of the most influential games that helped shape the industry into what it is today, for better or worse. Obviously, I’m not going to hit them all. If you want to add to the list, leave a comment and tell us what games you consider to be important stepping stones for the world of video games.

Pong, video games

Pong

  • Released: 1972
  • Developer: Atari
  • Genre: Arcade Sports
  • Industry Impact: Demonstrated the commercial viability of arcade gaming and launched Atari into the mainstream.
  • Legacy: Established competitive multiplayer gaming and helped create the arcade industry.

Pong was a bit before my time, but thanks to a bar in Long Island, New York, called Deks, I played the game that made Atari a household name for hours on end. I didn’t even need money. My dad was friends with the owner, and they used to turn the coin deposits on the machines off so I could play Beer Tapper, Gunsmoke, and the Funhouse pinball machine to my heart’s content. Thanks, Dean! I forgive you for wearing fishing shorts to my Dad’s funeral! Pong is a two-dimensional sports game, not unlike table tennis, in which two players control paddles on opposite sides of the screen. Using the dials to move the paddles, players send a dot (or ball) to their opponent’s side of the screen and slip it past them to score points.

Pong is one of the earliest examples of players using their reflexes to score on their opponents in a game of anticipation, precision, and cunning. I have to imagine Pong was one of the first games where players would trash-talk each other as well. I’ve played many iterations of Pong, including a holographic version in a hotel lounge in Niagara Falls, and the words that flew out of my mouth were not always family-friendly. After appearing in bars and homes en masse, Pong proved that people would jump at the chance to test their skills and cough up a lot of money in the process.

Space Invaders, video games

Space Invaders

  • Released: 1978
  • Developer: Taito
  • Genre: Fixed Shooter
  • Industry Impact: Popularized high-score competition, endless progression, and the arcade shooter genre.
  • Legacy: Inspired generations of shoot-’em-up games.

Once I started going to arcades, it quickly became clear that a handful of games were staples of the gaming community, and Taito’s Space Invaders was one of them. Released in 1978, Space Invaders is a fixed-shooter with endless gameplay in which players control a ship while fending off an alien invasion. In its way, Space Invaders is one of the first cover-based shooters, as players use stationary defense bunkers to protect themselves from enemy attacks. As you shoot your way through the hordes, the enemies gradually make their way toward your ship, chipping away at your protection with every blast of their cannons.

While arcade owners initially rejected Space Invaders, the game eventually found its audience, with countless players ready to pump quarters into the machine in hopes of adding their name to the top of the scoreboard. Several titans of the gaming industry consider Space Invaders one of the most revolutionary video games ever, with its endless progression and quarter-munching capabilities opening new doors for arcade cabinet makers. There are near-infinite remakes, spinoffs, and reimaginings of Space Invaders, with one of my favorites being Space Invaders Frenzy, a sit-down version of the arcade classic with new power-ups, an LED billboard display, and co-op action.

Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, video games

Pac-Man / Ms. Pac-Man

  • Released: 1980 / 1982
  • Developer: Namco / General Computer Corporation & Midway
  • Genre: Maze Action
  • Industry Impact: Proved gaming mascots could become mainstream entertainment icons.
  • Legacy: Expanded gaming’s audience beyond young male arcade players.

The year was 1980, when Pac-Man, originally titled Puck Man, started gobbling quarters like so many ghosts and pellets in Namco’s hit arcade game. In Pac-Man, players control the titular insatiable character while navigating a maze and avoiding four differently colored ghosts (Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde). If you eat a Power Pellet, the ghosts turn blue, making them vulnerable to Pac-Man’s appetite. The goal of Pac-Man designer Toru Iwatani and his nine-person team was to design a gender-neutral, addictive gaming experience that tested players’ reflexes and the need to see their initials on the high score board (long live the mighty ASS, long may they reign).

Astonishingly, Pac-Man received a mild response from critics and players, with many complaining about the character’s slow response time. Then, in 1982, General Computer Corporation and Midway Manufacturing introduced Ms. Pac-Man, a faster, superior version of the original game. Praised for featuring a female protagonist, Ms. Pac-Man became an overnight icon, with players unable to keep themselves from returning to Pac-Man arcade machines to compete against friends while wolfing down Nathan’s Famous hot dogs by the fistful. The combined power of both characters helped launch a franchise with sequels, spinoffs, adventure games, animated adaptations, apparel, stuffies, car decals, and more. To this day, Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man are two of the most recognizable characters in gaming, with their games paving the way for score-attack modes in countless titles throughout gaming history.

DOOM, video games

DOOM

  • Released: 1993
  • Developer: id Software
  • Genre: First-Person Shooter
  • Industry Impact: Popularized fast-paced FPS gameplay, LAN multiplayer, and modding communities.
  • Legacy: Influenced nearly every major shooter released over the following three decades.

I’ll never forget when DOOM launched on the PC in 1993. My friend Daniel’s brother, Mickey, was obsessed. We could hear him screaming from behind a closed door between bong hits, while mowing down hordes of undead and invading demons. When he finally took a break and let us play, I remember the exhilaration of navigating “Doomguy” through a series of corridors, his head bobbing in a hypnotic, almost sickening fashion, and the squelch and squish of demons lying in a burbling pile on the ground. The gameplay was fast, frenzied, and violent, with DOOM feeling like a game you needed to hide from your parents.

In the years that followed, games like Wolfenstein, Serious Sam, Quake, Duke Nukem, Devil Daggers, and more took Doom’s classic FPS run-and-gun gameplay to new heights, but it was id Software’s DOOM that popularized the genre. Today, there are many iterations of DOOM, with DOOM (2016) among the best of the sequels and remakes. DOOM not only helped light a match on the fuse of corridor shooters, but it also paved the way for the first-person shooter genre to flourish, leading to some of the game industry’s most sought-after releases for generations.

Tetris, video games

Tetris

  • Released: 1985 (NES version 1989)
  • Developer: Alexey Pajitnov
  • Genre: Puzzle
  • Industry Impact: Demonstrated that simple mechanics could create endlessly replayable gameplay.
  • Legacy: Became one of the most recognizable puzzle games ever created.

Released on the NES in 1989, Tetris is the ultimate high-tension puzzle game for individuals who enjoy strategic, clever, and frantic gameplay. Inspired by Alexey Pajitnov’s 1985 game, Tetris challenges players to test their reflexes as puzzle pieces fall into a confined space. When positioned correctly, the pieces form a line; those lines then fade away (or clear), making room for more. The more lines you make, the faster the game gets, building toward an onslaught of shapes that threaten the flow and integrity of the puzzle board.

As the gameplay speeds up, so does the tempo of unforgettable tunes, creating an urgency unrivaled by most puzzle games. Tetris is another series with countless sequels that introduce new game mechanics, but there’s nothing like the original. Upon its release, players contracted what was known as “Tetris fever,” a condition in which they would chase the dragon of another high score after losing hours of their lives to Pajitnov’s addictive and unrelenting game. In time, Tetris sent a signal flare to game makers, letting them know that the puzzle genre was open for business, and there was room for innovation.

Super Mario Bros., video games

Super Mario Bros.

  • Released: 1985
  • Developer: Nintendo
  • Genre: Platformer
  • Industry Impact: Defined modern side-scrolling platform game design.
  • Legacy: Established Nintendo’s flagship franchise and became a blueprint for platformers.

Few games of the Nintendo Entertainment System get more iconic than Super Mario Bros. Released on Nintendo’s home console in 1985, Super Mario introduced millions to the concept of embarking on a side-scrolling platforming adventure while controlling a lovable mascot that would soon become the most recognizable mascot in gaming history. Super Mario opened the floodgates for a genre that continues to dazzle players while introducing new game mechanics, killer soundtracks, and inventive ways to interact with environments that change from one game to the next.

The tight controls, the brilliant and surprising level design, the music! I could play the entire soundtrack in my head from start to finish with impeccable recall. From World 1-1 to the Underground level, the flagpole and fireworks victory fanfare, and the hypnotic bloops of the Underwater level; it’s all so timeless and unforgettable. Everyone remembers the first time they sent Bowser to the fiery depths, or found out the princess was in another castle. Super Mario Bros. was a revelation and an awakening, setting the bar for action platformers for every title in the genre thereafter.

The Legend of Zelda, video games

The Legend of Zelda

  • Released: 1986
  • Developer: Nintendo
  • Genre: Action Adventure
  • Industry Impact: Popularized exploration, nonlinear progression, and environmental discovery.
  • Legacy: Continues to influence adventure and open-world game design.

With a film adaptation by director Wes Ball due in 2027, The Legend of Zelda is a quintessential gaming franchise alongside Super Mario. The first entry in this legendary series is still one of its best, encouraging players to explore a vast overworld map and dungeons in ways that make trial and error part of the fun. Anyone who plays The Legend of Zelda will never forget the first time they burned a bush to find a hidden staircase underneath, or when a seemingly random bomb revealed a path to game-changing secrets or special equipment.

Since The Legend of Zelda’s release, there have been 21 games in the core franchise, with countless spinoffs expanding the series, including musou fighting games, open-world epics, and a rhythm-based game called Cadence of Hyrule from the makers of Crypt of the Necrodancer. Still, few NES experiences compare to the feeling of navigating the Lost Woods, finding the Master Sword, or discovering a much-needed fairy sanctuary when your final heart is about to break. One could even argue that the Zelda franchise revolutionized gaming again in 2017 with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Nintendo Switch. The franchise’s rich history is one of the ages. Still, the first is where Zelda kicked the door wide open for the dungeon-crawler adventure genre, which has led to countless titles across a wide spectrum.

Grand Theft Auto III, video games

Grand Theft Auto III

  • Released: 2001
  • Developer: DMA Design / Rockstar Games
  • Genre: Open-World Action
  • Industry Impact: Redefined open-world gameplay and player freedom.
  • Legacy: Inspired an entire generation of sandbox action games.

Is there such a thing as a GTA hipster, because I was definitely playing the franchise before it was cool. The top-down mayhem of Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2 was fun, but when DMA Design and Rockstar Games reintroduced GTA to players with a third-person perspective, it was the beginning of a gaming revolution. GTA III, set in Liberty City, loosely based on New York City (my home turf), gives players control of Claude, a small-time criminal making his way up the ranks as he lies, cheats, and steals from some of the most notorious crime bosses in the bustling city.

When Grand Theft Auto III hit the scene, there was nothing else like it on Earth, and gamers could not get enough of Claude’s harrowing missions for various crime syndicates around the city. Looking at the soon-to-be-released Grand Theft Auto VI, it’s easy to forget that GTA was once a shadow of what it is today, but that shadow loomed larger than any other in 2001. Grand Theft Auto III opened the floodgates for a circus of GTA-likes, with games like Mafia, Saints Row, Sleeping Dogs, and more apeing the formula to varying degrees of success. The people who were there at Grand Theft Auto III‘s release remember and will never forget who the real O.G. is.

World of Warcraft, video games

World of Warcraft

  • Released: 2004
  • Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
  • Genre: MMORPG
  • Industry Impact: Popularized large-scale online social gaming and subscription-based MMORPGs.
  • Legacy: Set the standard for online communities, raids, and persistent virtual worlds.

While I’m more of a Diablo fan, there’s no denying the awesome power of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft. Unleashed on PC and macOS in 2004, this massively multiplayer online role-playing game transformed a startling amount of the gaming population into leet-speaking, gatekeeping critters surviving on a diet of fast food, beds fashioned from unwashed laundry, and no sunlight for days on end. I joke, but my friend’s sister (who played WOW religiously) marinated in a room that smelled like hot dog cart water and Nag Champa incense. No, I don’t know how the hot dog water smell overpowered the Nag Champa. We may never know.

Anyway, Blizzard’s World of Warcraft took the gaming stratosphere by storm, establishing communities of trolls and genuinely great people to explore the planet of Azeroth as they saw fit. While WOW wasn’t always the most welcoming game, it redefined the communal online gaming experience with vast parties, raids, and objectives that could take days to accomplish. If you were late to the party, you never heard the end of it. Still, WOW opened up the world of online gaming for countless players who toiled night and day for the Alliance or the Horde. The sense of belonging associated with WOW is unmatched, with players making life-long friends or meeting their true love through the game’s seemingly endless adventures. The MMORPG genre is its own monster at this stage of the game, but WOW broke the mold and laid the foundation for a genre that continues to mean so much to so many.

Dark Souls, video games

Dark Souls

  • Released: 2011
  • Developer: FromSoftware
  • Genre: Action RPG
  • Industry Impact: Popularized the Soulslike genre and emphasized challenging, methodical combat.
  • Legacy: Continues to influence action RPGs and game design philosophy across the industry.

Gamers thought they knew what pain was until FromSoftware’s Dark Souls came along and made them eat dirt. Created by Hidetaka Miyazaki, Dark Souls is the seed of the Soulsborne genre, a style of game known for its Gothic themes, blistering difficulty, inventive weaponry, and extensive lore. When people started playing Dark Souls, they were unaware of the challenge it would offer. The game helped restore a sense of community in the gaming space as players flocked online to discuss strategies and share secrets. The process of completing the game became a communal effort, and it was golden, until the “Git Good” crowd reared their unwashed heads, acting as if they were a gift to the hobby of gaming.

As Dark Souls grew in popularity, so did the Soulsborne genre, with sequels, imitators, and fresh takes on the formula making it feel good to get your ass kicked all over again. While Lords of the Fallen has tried to capitalize on the Dark Souls formula, it’s games like Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Lies of P, and the GOAT, Elden Ring, that have emerged as the best iterations on FromSoftware’s original game-changer. For many, there’s nothing like the pain and pleasure of learning the ropes of a Dark Souls-inspired title. I’m one of them. Bring it on.
