Chris

When it comes to the greatest movie stars of all time, Tom Cruise has to be near the top of the list—if not at the very top. Since his debut in Taps, he’s starred in a seemingly never-ending series of classics. Today, July 3rd, actually marks Cruise’s sixty-fourth birthday. Still looking impossibly young deep into middle age, Cruise shows no signs of slowing down, with one of his most intriguing movies in years, Digger, opening in theaters this fall.

With the many, many amazing movies he’s made, how does one even try to pick his best? That’s the challenge I’ve given myself with this list of Tom Cruise’s 10 best movies. I’m sure everyone will have issues with my picks, but I tried to strike a balance between his all-time classics, his most important films, and the occasional oddball choice. Read on!

10. Vanilla Sky

I feel like this is the movie on the list that will divide readers the most, but I couldn’t possibly leave it off. It marked his final (to date) collaboration with Cameron Crowe, and it’s a brilliant deconstruction of the Tom Cruise persona, daring to strip away his good looks for much of the running time. It’s a fabulous film that gets better the more you watch it.

9. Rain Man

Barry Levinson’s Rain Man is one of the most important films in Tom Cruise’s filmography because it finally made critics take him seriously. He’d been written off during the first part of the decade as little more than a heartthrob, and it’s hard to believe now that some of his finest films, like Top Gun, weren’t especially well received by critics. While The Color of Money (my pick for his most underrated movie) started the critical re-evaluation, Rain Man made him elite.

8. Born on the Fourth of July

Yet it was when Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July came out that no one could deny Cruise’s power as an actor, with him earning his first Oscar nomination (and, in my opinion, he should have won). Playing soldier-turned-paraplegic anti-war activist Ron Kovic, this is the kind of movie that guts you from the first frame to the last.

7. Mission: Impossible

This is the one I struggled with the most on this list. As big of a Tom Cruise fan as I am, the Mission: Impossible series is kind of a double-edged sword in that his role as Ethan Hunt became such a huge part of his modern persona that Cruise has, in my opinion, let it overshadow just how brilliant he is as an actor. While not the best Mission: Impossible movie (Fallout gets that honor), it’s the most important, with it beginning Cruise’s reinvention as an action hero—even if it was the sequel that truly cemented it.

6. The Last Samurai

While not the biggest hit on this list, Cruise has always said it remains a personal favorite of his, and you can see why. It mixes his flair for action (the sword fights are killer), his dramatic chops, and his passion for epics, making for a terrific, immersive journey into feudal Japan through the eyes of an outsider.

5. Risky Business

Some will say this movie is too dated to make the list, but it’s way slicker than you might remember. It established the Cruise persona, with his shark-like smile, Ray-Ban sunglasses, and megawatt charisma, all set to a killer Tangerine Dream score.

4. A Few Good Men

People may not remember, but for a while in the early nineties, many thought Cruise was finished. Days of Thunderunderperformed, and his follow-up, Far and Away, was a flop. But then he landed A Few Good Men, got paired with Jack Nicholson, and sank his teeth into Aaron Sorkin’s dialogue under the ace direction of the late Rob Reiner. Cruise was back, baby—for good.

3. Collateral

When I first heard Michael Mann had cast Tom Cruise as a villain in Collateral, I never thought it would work. Cruise was so closely identified as a hero that I couldn’t imagine buying him as a bad guy. I was wrong. The second he makes his first appearance, casually picking up a package from an intimidated-looking Jason Statham (widely believed to be playing his Transporter character in a cameo), I was completely on board. This remains one of the finest performances of his career.

2. Jerry Maguire

No one else could have made Jerry Maguire work. Had Cameron Crowe cast anyone else in the lead, I think the movie would have been laughed off the screen. Think about it: could you accept anyone else saying “You complete me” and not only avoid chuckling, but actually hold back tears? It’s one of the ultimate director-star pairings, and I still wish Crowe and Cruise would work together again—or that Cruise would give us another romance.

1. Top Gun

What else could the best Tom Cruise movie be? Easily his most iconic film, director Tony Scott, along with producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, took the persona established by Risky Business and transformed Cruise into an all-time legend. And then, if that weren’t enough, he somehow pulled off the exact same trick again when the sequel arrived thirty-six years later. To me, Maverick remains his definitive character.
