Ever notice how the cosmos loves a good comeback story? With the Moon hanging out in industrious Virgo today, it’s all about refinement and second chances — and Netflix seems to be riding that very vibe by renewing the sitcom Leanne for a second season. Starring and co-created by the endlessly charming Leanne Morgan, who teamed up with comedy titan Chuck Lorre and Susan McMartin to breathe life into this laugh-packed, multi-camera gem, the show shot into Netflix’s global top 10 like a comet. It’s a rare mix of warmth, wit, and straight-up hilarity that’s clearly caught the hearts of viewers — after racking up a staggering 1.34 billion minutes of viewing in just its first two weeks. So, what’s next for Morgan, the Knoxville native who turned a Netflix plea to “bring back multicam” into an instant greenlight? Well, the stars (and Netflix) are all aligned for season two — with Morgan buzzing about the incredible journey and a whole lot of gratitude for the fans who made it happen. Netflix is extending its relationship with Leanne Morgan.
The streamer has renewed Morgan’s sitcom Leanne, which she stars in and co-created, for a second season. The pickup comes a month and change after the well-reviewed multi-camera series, co-created by Morgan, Susan McMartin and Chuck Lorre, debuted its 16-episode first season.
“We’re coming back for a second season!” Morgan said in a statement. I am so grateful to all the writers, producers, Netflix, [Warner Bros. TV], our amazing cast and especially for all the fans of the show. Y’all did this for us and we can’t wait to be back.”
Added Lorre, “Much thanks and gratitude to Netflix for this amazing opportunity. Congrats to Leanne and the entire cast and crew. This has been an incredible journey that began with a visit to Knoxville, Tennessee. Leanne Morgan is the whole package. A comedic genius, a warm, loving human being, and an absolute joy to work with.”
The renewal for Leanne continues Morgan’s working relationship with the streamer. Her second Netflix stand-up special, Unspeakable Things, is set to premiere in November, following 2023’s I’m Every Woman. She also has another Netflix special on tap for 2027.
Morgan told The Hollywood Reporter that she and Lorre initially conceived of Leanne as a single-camera show. “But Netflix said, ‘Would y’all please consider doing a multicam and bringing that [format] back?’ I thought, ‘Don’t put that burden on me.’ Then they said, ‘We’ll greenlight it right now if you do.’”
Leanne spent two weeks in Netflix’s global top 10 rankings for English-language series after its July 31 premiere. In the United States, its first two weeks racked up 1.34 billion minutes of viewing time, according to Nielsen.
Leanne also stars Kristen Johnston, Celia Weston, Blake Clark, Ryan Stiles, Graham Rogers and Hannah Pilkes. Morgan, McMartin and Lorre (via his Chuck Lorre Productions) executive produce with Nick Bakay and Judi Marmel. Warner Bros. TV, Lorre’s long-time home, is the studio.
