Just as Mickey and Travis got back together on Sheriff Country, they broke up again.

During Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 9, the midseason finale, Travis gave a powerful speech about change and how he could see that Mickey was a different woman from the one he had divorced.

Then, on Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 10, the midseason premiere, there was a declaration of love and a chance to see a divorced couple find their way back to each other.

Yet, it was all over before it even began, and it does feel like Sheriff Country Season 1 did the couple dirty.

The Relationship Should Have Lasted More Episodes

I don’t mind that they broke up again. People always say that exes are exes for a reason.

Mickey and Travis got together when they were young, and I’ve always been under the impression that they married more out of obligation than love.

I’m sure that had Mickey not been pregnant with Skye at 18, the high school sweethearts would eventually have gone their separate ways, but they were in a small town with certain expectations placed on them.

Plus, in a way, Travis wanted to stick it to his family a little bit.

However, throughout Sheriff Country Season 1, we saw that they once loved each other, and there was a hint that those feelings were returning.

The entire speech about change made it clear that they — or at least, Travis — knew what it would take for a successful reconciliation.

That’s why the whole thing should have lasted longer than just one episode.

We got the honeymoon stage, but that only lasts so long. The reality comes after all that, as couples attempt to figure out how to integrate their lives.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

Even with reconciliation, there is this honeymoon phase and then the dip.

There would have been nothing wrong with Travis and Mickey realizing they hadn’t changed enough and needed time.

Instead, Mickey didn’t even attempt to change during Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 11. She gave Travis an ultimatum, and he realized that he was fighting a losing battle.

Rather than having a discussion, the entire relationship was over, and it felt like this build-up to them getting back together for three or four episodes was for nothing.

The excitement during the winter break was wasted.

Can Mickey Realize That She Was Wrong?

Mickey was definitely in the wrong.

I could understand why she was against Travis representing Barlow for his defense, but Travis had a great point about owing the man his life.

If it weren’t for Barlow performing first aid on Travis while locked in the room during the siege, Travis would have definitely died.

All the series offered was the argument between the former married couple, and Sheriff Country Season 2 has a chance to rectify that.

There hasn’t even been a conversation after all this, as arcs moved on to finding the missing girls of Edgewater and dealing with Miranda being behind Emerald Eden.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

It’s clear that the two are still good co-parents, and there are still clearly some feelings there, but all they’ve discussed is Wes and Skye.

The door is open for conversation, given the situation Mickey is now in. Not only does she need to work with her dad, whom she wants to cut off, but she’s also found out that her mom is alive.

Mickey will need someone to lean on, and the best person for that is Travis.

He knew Mickey throughout high school, and he knows what the loss of her mom and subsequent stepmoms did to her mentality and emotional development.

(Christos Kalohoridis/CBS)

Out of everyone in her personal life, she’s going to turn to her ex-husband for support. She should turn to him, and it opens up a chance to get to the bottom of their feelings.

Again, if it means they realize they are better off as friends, then fine, but Sheriff Country owes it to them and us to actually show those kinds of conversations on screen.

Not every show gets love, but we still cover them.

If you made it this far, you probably care about Sheriff Country as much as we do.

Drop a note, hit share, and keep rooting for the little guys — us and the show.
