Sabrina Carpenter has found herself facing one of the darker realities of fame. The singer recently secured a restraining order against an alleged stalker, who repeatedly visited her home, claiming to know her. While Carpenter continues to enjoy rising success in music, the situation highlights the challenges public figures face when their popularity attracts unwanted and persistent attention.
On June 1, Sabrina Carpenter was granted a temporary restraining order against an individual identified as 31-year-old William Applegate. Rolling Stone has obtained the singer’s signed declaration that detailed the events leading to the request. Per Carpenter’s statement, Applegate attempted to break into her home multiple times in the past weeks.
Applegate showed up at the singer’s L.A. home, as seen on her front door’s Ring camera. He trespassed on a neighbor’s property to bypass the security fence and get to Carpenter’s home. He then rang the doorbell and attempted to open the front door before security confronted him. In the filing, Carpenter noted that the man “fabricated the outrageous and entirely false claim that he personally knew me and that I was expecting him.”
Authorities were called when Applegate refused to comply with security, and he was arrested.
The following day, May 24, Applegate returned to Carpenter’s property and remained in the area for several hours. He also returned on May 25 and parked his vehicle outside the singer’s home, allegedly “conducting what can only be described as deliberate surveillance” of Carpenter’s movements. The singer noted that it was the “most disturbing violation of personal safety and privacy” that she has experienced.
In her restraining order filing, Carpenter requested that the order be extended to the two other people who live with her, her sister, and her sister’s boyfriend. “This is not the behavior of someone who stumbled upon my property by accident. This is intentional stalking and surveillance directed at my residence,” Carpenter wrote.
The singer was granted a temporary restraining order, and Applegate was ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from the singer, the residents, and the house, as well as Carpenter’s car and place of work.
Applegate repeatedly insisted that Carpenter knew him and was expecting him, which the singer refuted. She called his behavior “dangerous” and “delusional,” adding that his stalking has caused extreme emotional distress and has left her fearing for what Applegate is capable of doing.
An LAPD detective has also provided his declaration for the court, sharing that Applegate’s suspicious activities at the singer’s home may have started in April. “This trajectory is consistent with well-documented patterns of stalking behavior that pose a serious and escalating risk to victim safety,” the detective wrote.
Applegate is due in court for another hearing to determine whether the restraining order should be permanent. He will also appear in criminal court for a trespassing charge.
This isn’t Carpenter’s first time dealing with aggressive behavior. In 2025, the singer was in Paris for her “Short n’ Sweet Tour,” and as she was leaving a restaurant, a swarm of paparazzi hounded her as she walked to her waiting car, as previously reported by The Blast.
Carpenter concealed her face with a cloth, preventing the paparazzi from getting a clear shot. At one point, one photographer repeatedly shouted, “Shame on you, Sabrina!” Another said, “The fans will see this, Sabrina!”
The fans did see the short clip, which went viral. They defended Carpenter and criticized the paparazzi for their pushy behavior toward the singer.
Carpenter began her professional career in entertainment as an actress and was later cast in Disney Channel’s “Girl Meets World,” nabbing roles in a few movies years after. In 2010, she placed third in the online contest “The Next Miley Cyrus Project.”
