Critic’s Rating: 4 / 5.0

Casey or KC (take your pick) returns on The Way Home Season 4 Episode 7, finally laying to rest our speculation about Sam in the process.

And it brings to light one of my most significant questions of the series so far, which I don’t believe will be resolved because to most, it won’t matter.

To find out what nit I’m picking there and a whole lot more, join me below!

Now we know. Sam isn’t from anywhere but here. KC told Sam the future. She needed his help because of his proximity to Del and because she knew he and Del were together in the future.

She knew him intimately, which speaks well of how Sam and Del’s relationship continues. It’s also an answer about a man we thought was mysterious merely because he had a secret.

The latest visit finds Sam down on his luck because things with Del are so shaky right now, but KC reminds him of something, in a way similar to what was delivered to Alice when she asked about Max on The Way Home Season 4 Episode 6.

What happens will always happen, so don’t take it all for granted. Alice’s nudge was that if she was already thinking in that direction, it would likely happen.

So what’s my nitpick? I’m happy to get this off my shoulders and onto your plate.

What the hell happened between Fern’s generation and KC’s that shut the door on discussing the pond with your family?

Fern always knew when someone was ready to emerge from the pond. She was right there to greet them. She purposefully chose to speak in riddles, not to give too much away.

Yet by the time we get to Kat and Jacob, and even before, if we’re to believe Colton didn’t know about the pond until he stumbled into it himself, the family stopped sharing the mysteries of the pond. Hell, the Landry family we knew never even had a picnic by the pond.

Was it Colton’s parents’ generation that put the quibbosh on that?

And will it be the next generation that benefits from the current Landrys’ travels because they will share the mysteries of the pond with their own families, including the dangers of revealing too much of the future to someone?

We’ve got three episodes of The Way Home to go, and I know that won’t be explored.

But it’s those little family-related tales that truly bring a story alive. Sure, plot points do a lot of heavy lifting, but traditions and family secrets that are passed down are far more exciting for this old gal.

And unless we’re going to get a massive information dump in the finale alongside the wedding, we’re just going to have to use our imaginations to fill in all the gaps. And I really wanted more. Much more.

Fern actually felt silly for not recognizing that Aunty Coop was a time traveler when all of the evidence was laid out before her. She was smitten with Tessa because she answered to no man. She was a great influence on Fern, yet Fern still yearns for a fella she can spend her life with.

KC even stuck around for family dinner, with everyone knowing she was a time traveler from the future. Kat tried to bring that up at dinner, but Alice cut her off. KC looked uncomfortable. But it was Alice’s future that was in question.

Alice wants to put college on the back burner until she feels comfortable with where life in Port Haven is leading. And she kind of laid her decision at KC’s feet, which made the young time traveler upset enough to leave.

And then, finally, someone reminded Alice that not everything is about her. KC even brings up what launched this review. In the future, the Landrys love going on about the good old days, but all they do now is keep secrets and fight.

What’s so good about that? And yet… something must have happened in the future to bring KC to the past, so it can’t be all wine and roses.

KC wanted “to have a little fun before everything changed,” which is a huge reveal to drop at Alice’s feet, especially when the follow-up was “everything is a countdown to something, Alice.”

Is something changing in the future or the past? Was KC seeking solace in the past or hoping to see everyone before their lives are knocked sideways?

Needing solace of her own, Alice jumped into the past at the moment KC went to the future.

Del was just depressed, unhappy that they had no children. And I can’t help but wonder why they didn’t consider adoption. I mean, we have the benefit of knowing the future, but they don’t. As far as they know, children aren’t in their future.

Yet Alice has the ability to set that straight with a single comment. Your future will change. Don’t give up. Where’s the harm in sharing that?

But that also revealed that Griffin wasn’t such a bad guy. He gave his brother excellent advice. Ish.

Colton will be strong for Del while she struggles with miscarriages instead of children, but eventually, his desire to keep her safe will also pull them apart, as we saw during The Way Home Season 1 when he kept so much hidden from Del under the guise of protecting her.

It’s a fine line between protection and unwarranted secrecy.

In the dawn of the ’80s, Kat showed up in a film from the past, and Evie knew she had been in town for hundreds of years, connecting the dots among the white witch, the woman who saved her from the pond, and more.

Even Jasper remembered Kat as Alice’s mom. She did some fancy footwork to escape that, but failed miserably at eliminating the video evidence of Kat.

And how sad does it make you that Alice’s golden days are in the past with people who weren’t really her peers?

Not to mention, it was still shocking to me that Alice was with Noah. At this point, with all of her questions, I’d think she’d put romance on the back burner until she figures it all out. Not that it’s what most young kids would do.

She has the benefit of foresight, though, so I probably expect too much from her. She is still just a kid.

KC’s visit served another purpose — to keep Del’s relationship with Sam on track. Sam finally realized what was missing for Del. He knows what she doesn’t, and he wasn’t taking her for granted because he felt less, but because he was so secure in their future that he wasn’t worried.

Of course, since she wasn’t in on that secret, she saw things differently. What’s hilarious is that they’re both keeping secrets from each other about time travel. If they’d just spill the beans, they’d be on the same page.

Not that I expect Del to feel good about it, but it might give her comfort to know she’d already made a decision and that life with Sam was good.

So now, Sam is stuck between saying everything and driving her away or saying nothing and hoping she still wants him.

Del is still experiencing butterflies when she sees Colton’s spirit, which is holding her back from committing to Sam.

Honestly, butterflies are overrated. Once you open yourself to someone, you can find them again. So the trick is that she won’t know what she doesn’t know until she throws caution to the wind.

At least Sam stepped it up, planning a lovely outdoor theater night for Del, who admitted she loved Sam. She said it when he saved her from the field, and it wasn’t an aftereffect of seeing Colton. She truly meant it for Sam.

The best news of all is that Sam wants to be honest with Del, telling her everything, if not every detail that he apparently knows of the future. KC didn’t even push back, just reminded him to proceed with caution.

That could be the beginning of why the future is more open to the pond’s mysteries than the last couple of generations.

In other news, Jacob is struggling with modern dating. But when he chose to ask Danny about it, I got a weird feeling from his old friend. “Things always seem to work out for you,” was said with a bit of disdain, don’t you think?

And all of the stuff with Jacob and Abby? I don’t feel a connection between them. I did when they initially met, but now it feels forced. At least on Abby’s part. It could be Holly Devaux’s acting style that I don’t appreciate. She’s a little less natural than Spencer Macpherson.

And now it’s time for my weekly I can’t stand Tessa sermon. Poor Elliot. What an awful reunion.

She’s more interested in helping Capone and being with her people in the past than reconnecting with Elliot. She’s not a good mother, proving that not all women have their come-to-Jesus moment after giving birth.

Yet Elliot decided to stay behind anyway.

If Kat was worried before talking with Grandma Fern, she should be even more concerned now. Grandma Fern reminded Kat that Landry women are cursed when it comes to true love. And she offered another riddle. The key is the key.

So, first, we need a key, and then we need to understand it. That’s a tall order with three episodes of The Way Home Season 4 remaining. If it’s the key to unlocking the entire story, we will be opening an absolute treasure trove of answers when the key is discovered, right?

And then… the piano repairman appeared, hired by Elliot, to repair a KEY on the piano. A broken key that led to a drawing of a key and a letter written on the page that had been torn from the Alice book.

It was a love letter from Cliff to Fern, but if it likely answers one question — who Colton’s grandfather was — it opens others. Why hide it in, of all places, wrapped around a piano key? Why was Cliff’s memory erased from history? And who wrapped the letter around the key?

It’s been days since Elliot stayed behind, and it was the first time that Kat was in his home, which was littered with news clippings from the past. Girl, what happened to the great investigator??

Elliot was right there on the front page of the now-defunct Herald as Tom Buchanan, being arrested as the Big Fish. He knew the past and was stepping into it on purpose. He even took a sabbatical to protect his future.

But he didn’t tell Kat, which is just another secret he’s keeping because… why? Didn’t he think she’d understand? This is Kat, who tried every which way to save her dad and untangle the mystery around his death.

If anyone was going to understand, it would be her. That he didn’t trust her to stand beside him and understand his decision makes me wonder if she’s his person, like she believes him to be hers.

But enough from me. How are you feeling about all of this as our time draws ever closer to the end?
