It’s the end of an era, but not the end of a career.

Frank Marino, long celebrated as the “Queen of Las Vegas,” is closing the curtain on his iconic show “Divas, Drag & Drinks,” marking the end of a defining chapter in Las Vegas entertainment. After years of dazzling audiences with high-glam impersonations, sharp comedy, and signature Vegas flair, the show’s finale signals a shift – not a goodbye – for the legendary performer. Marino remains as dynamic as ever, with plans to pivot a bit, evolving with the times, and enjoying a little more freedom. But don’t get it wrong, his reign in Sin City is far from over.

Frank Marino sat down with The Blast to discuss why now is the right time to end the popular show, what he plans to do next, and how he had a hand in evolving drag during his 40-plus year career.

The end is near, but there’s still time to catch a showing of “Divas, Drag, and Drinks” before the curtain closes for the last time. The hit show at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas ends its long run on May 31, so now is the time before it’s too late.

When asked how he’s feeling about the show ending, Marino said, “it’s just hitting now.”

“The emotional rollercoaster is going a little crazy. I am looking forward to some relaxation, rest, but I am also giving up something that I love so much,” he told The Blast exclusively. “It’s bittersweet.”

Marino said the time felt right because he wants to go out “while we’re still on top.” The show is packed every night, the audience really brings the energy and excitement, and Marino said the show is number two on TripAdvisor, so it feels like the right time to close. But just because the show is ending, doesn’t mean Marino will stop performing.

“There are some other things I want to try. I am not retiring; I am ending the show,” he reiterated. “And I am going to go into more content creation and be like an influencer.”

The Entertainment Climate In Vegas Has Shifted A Lot Since Frank Marino Got His Start

Another reason Marino said now is the time to close the curtain for the last time is because of how entertainment has shifted in Vegas over the years.

“Everybody always says to me, ‘Did you know it was going to last?’ and to be honest, I really knew it was going to last. I just knew it was an art form that would carry through. And even when I was doing the big show with Caesars Entertainment, it was always the bizarre things like drag shows and male strip shows that did better than all the other shows,” Marino said. “We were always packed in the early days. We had three shows a night, seven days a week when we were at the Riviera. But now entertainment has switched, in my opinion, in Vegas.”

Marino said that the entertainment shift in Vegas is now leaning more toward sports and celebrity chefs. And the economy being how it is, sometimes tourists have to choose between a large variety of things to do while visiting.

“If you’re coming here [Vegas] and you’ve got a thousand dollar budget for entertainment, that’s getting divided between sports, food, and shows,” Marino said. “The big shows now can afford the marketing because we never had Cirques and superstars in the early days. Now you got the superstars, you got Cirque shows, you got international shows like Blue Man. So what I call the mom-and-pop shows like myself, it’s getting more and more difficult to get the word out to people to let them know we’re here.”

Frank Marino Is The ‘GOAT’ With Many Amazing Memories To Show For It

When the topic of 40 years of great memories joined the chat, Marino said that someone recently called him the “GOAT” and he asked what that meant. After he was told it’s the “greatest of all time,” he said, “I like that label. That’s the one I want to be remembered as.”

Marino said he has “thousands” of memories from his amazing 40-year career. He first wanted to thank the city of Las Vegas for all it’s done for him – he has a street named after him, two stars on the Boulevard (he’s the only person with two stars), and they recently changed the color of the lights on the Welcome to Las Vegas sign in honor of his 40th year of performing.

“There are so many things [memories] that I couldn’t pick just one but the journey itself has been just amazing and I absolutely love Las Vegas,” Marino shared.

On the topic of Las Vegas, Marino said that he loves that Vegas is a 24-hour city and that you can live in a quiet neighborhood and then have all the excitement you want a few miles away on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip.

“Or you could go the other direction and go to Mount Charleston and just have a really relaxing evening and some cocktails,” he said. “So, it’s got everything. It’s got the restaurants, it’s got the nightclubs, it’s got the pools, it’s got so many things that you have to go out of your way in other cities to get. We have it all. I love the abundance of activities in Las Vegas.”

How Drag Has Evolved Since The Early Days Of Frank Marino’s Career

When Marino began his career more than 40 years ago, the drag landscape was very different than it currently is. It’s evolved and grown over the years and Marino has been front and center during it all.

“Before me there was an artist named Kenny Kerr who opened the door. And I would say, we came into town and ‘Divas’ blew open the windows and the door,” Marino explained. “And then RuPaul, the television show, just took it into the stratosphere. So now it’s mainstream where it was a very odd thing to see when you came to Vegas.”

Marino said that you couldn’t find a show like “Divas” anywhere but Vegas back then and people would go to the show and “be in awe.” Now, people attend his shows because they saw it on TV and they like the art form, but even that’s now evolving from impersonating big names to something more “generic.”

“The new form is creating your own kind of character and doing what I call a generic drag thing,” he said. “And they make their own personas up.”

For fans who have seen Marino in action, they might be surprised to know that when he’s not on stage, he’s “not the same loudmouth” he is on stage.

“I am pretty quiet. I enjoy my family life, and there is not one piece of drag in my entire house,” he shared. “There is not an eyelash or mascara wand or anything like that. It’s either at the Virgin Hotel in the beautiful suite they give me or in my warehouse.”

Marino said that he misses “Divas” already and it hasn’t even ended yet, so there’s hope that he will be performing once again soon.

“I love the Virgin for allowing me to be able to go into this slower instead of just abruptly closing the show. We just kept reducing the amount of shows and it really helped me mentally wind down because it is my life. I’ve never had another job,” he shared. “So I’ve done nothing but that my whole life. So that’s going to be strange. But if somebody else wanted me to do something with them and they had their own show, I would have no problem doing that. I’m retiring from producing. I don’t want to retire from performing.”

What else would Marino like to do with all the time he will have once the show ends? He has a few passions he would love to pursue.

“So here’s my two loves, two passions. One, I’ve been a guest star on every reality show in the world. I would like to have one of my own, and I did have my own in London. It was called ‘Last Laugh in Vegas’ which became a hit in England before the pandemic. So I’d like to have my own reality show because I really live my life thinking people would swear we were making this stuff up,” he said. “And the second thing, I would love to be a motivational speaker as myself. Come on stage as a man, and maybe help, let’s say, gay youth that think oh we can’t go anywhere, can’t do it. I would like to use my experiences to help them achieve their goals. That would be my dream job.”

Marino is also currently building his social media presence, and he’s looking to keep growing it more and more.

“What I like about it is I create all these things within my home. I don’t have to go out. I don’t have to get an opinion. I could try it, if it fails, I laugh at it. If it does well, I go, oh I was right,” he said. “I just enjoy being a ham on my own terms. And I speak to everybody. I answer every question asked because they took their time to say something to me.”
