It may be hard for Gen Z to picture, but once upon a time, MTV played actual music videos instead of non-stop episodes of Ridiculousness. And during that blissful time, millennials would plant themselves in front of the TV after school to watch their favorite artists duke it out for the #1 spot on Total Request Live. Videos would stay at the top spot for so long thanks to fans voting endlessly, that TRL’s host, Carson Daly, would literally retire videos after so many days on the show. A whole era of dedication you just had to be there to witness.
