Critic’s Rating: 4 / 5.0

We knew the Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Finale would write out Teddy and Owen, but that didn’t become the focus.

Instead, the focus was on Grey Sloan Memorial being inundated with patients from the bridge collapse.

Despite knowing that some of their own were on that bridge, the doctors get to work saving lives, but Grey’s Anatomy loves to put us through the wringer in finales, and that meant threatening history repeating itself for Meredith.

There’s Only One Person Meredith Can Trust

It doesn’t take long for Nick to be transported to the hospital, and of course, Meredith is called in.

Cass Beckman is there to help on Grey’s Anatomy since she couldn’t make it to her own hospital due to the bridge collapse, which leads to a great moment that shows just how far Nick and Meredith have come over the years.

As Cass asks who Meredith is to Nick, Meredith gives nobody time to answer, calling him her husband.

The look from Amelia and Nick’s comments about it makes it clear that nobody really expected Meredith to say this, but there’s also an element of respect.

If Meredith is happy to call someone she’s with her husband, she loves him, and we can’t argue with that.

Meredith has never given her heart easily to anyone, but as Amelia later points out, she and Nick are a team. They are supportive of each other, and that is a strong relationship that’s worthy of marriage.

Of course, Nick needs to make it out of surgery, and Meredith cannot be the one to operate.

As much as she would love to admit that she can do it all, Amelia is able to talk her out of it. Meredith has trained plenty of good general surgeons who could scrub in.

However, it’s not who Meredith has trained, but it’s the person who trained her.

There is only one person whom Meredith can trust with this, and it’s definitely not Webber.

Bailey and Meredith haven’t seen eye to eye on all cases.

In fact, Bailey has fired Meredith plenty of times. Yet, here they are, with water under the bridge — too soon? — showing just how far their relationship has come.

I’m really glad that Amelia points out to Cass that this is history repeating itself, and it’s without making it about her.

Amelia could have easily pointed out that Meredith’s husband was also her brother, but she didn’t. She makes it all about Meredith, and this is the selfless side of Amelia that I love.

Why can’t we have more of this?

Meredith was right in trusting Bailey, and we always knew that. Out of everyone in the hospital, Bailey has always remained calm and will always do what she can to save her patients.

In this case, it means calling Winston in, and out of everyone in the cardio department, Winston is focused and skilled.

I did wonder whether Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 would end with Meredith’s devastation, but then I thought about how many people she has loved and lost in this way.

It’s not just Derek, but also Deluca. Would the series really want to do that to her, her children, and us again?

(ABC/Screenshot)

Instead, we’re delivered with a happy ending for the duo, with an engagement that is one of the most genuine and beautiful the series has ever seen.

As for Bailey, she realizes she needs to bring about change at the hospital, but to do that, she needs to improve her skills.

It means heading back to school to get her master’s, and who is by her side? Warren, of course!

Given the number of career changes this man has had, he would have to support his wife as she makes one, but I just love that there isn’t even a discussion.

He’s right there with her, and it reminds us why these two are the power couple of Grey’s Anatomy.

Teddy and Owen Make Their Unsurprising Decision

When Grey’s Anatomy announced that Teddy and Owen would leave at the end of the season, we all knew that they were going to be written out together, right?

There were always hints that there would be some sort of happily ever after for them, and during Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 17, the writing was there.

Teddy had been offered a job in Paris, and naturally, that led to an argument between the two of them.

Just like with anything for these two characters, it takes a major catastrophe for both of them to realize what they want.

I get that we think of what we want and the people we love during major life events and trauma, but haven’t these two been through enough to know that in the end, they would choose each other?

The one thing I adored most was getting back to Owen’s medicine.

He became one of my favorite characters on Grey’s Anatomy Season 5 because he focused on emergency medicine.

He was willing to learn how to do things in a hospital, but he was always going to rely on his survival skills.

We got a hint of that throughout his final hour, between his emergency tracheostomy and the amputation in the field.

At no point did Owen question what he needed to do. All he needed was the husband’s/dad’s permission, and he ran with it.

I’ve missed this part of Grey’s Anatomy, so count me happy that we saw it as we say goodbye to Teddy and Owen — and yes, I did enjoy the little flashbacks of the two characters.

That being said, I’m not going to miss either of them.

This episode was a strong one for both of them, but too much has revolved around their relationship, and I’ll be happy to move the focus to other characters.

Chit Chat from the ER

Speaking of other characters, there are a few bits and pieces about others in the hospital:

  • One way of keeping Cass around is to hook her up with Amelia, but seriously? At least, this wouldn’t turn serious!
  • Toni should have realized that Amelia never promised to wait around for her.
  • I’m on Webber’s side with the firing of Blue, but I’m sure Catherine will reverse some decisions.
  • Well, I guess two surgeons will have the savings and investments for Jo to take time off to figure out what she wants to do — it’s alright for some!
  • I still don’t care about Simone, and she was just awful to Lucas after he apologized to her.
  • Can we not go down the hidden pain route? Grey’s Anatomy has already done that multiple times!
(Disney/Anne Marie Fox)

That’s it for another season of Grey’s Anatomy, and for once, we didn’t end with major life-or-death cliffhangers.

I’ll be back when Grey’s Anatomy returns, and let’s hope we can see the show return to its medicine-and-patient-driven storylines.
