Earlier today, Deadline stirred the pot by reporting that Marisa Abela, Ella Purnell, and Adria Arjona had screen tested for the role of Maxima in the upcoming film Man of Tomorrow. But, as if the stars themselves yanked the rug, James Gunn quickly shot back, branding the news “bullshit.” Now, as the cosmic dust settles, THR has come forth with a fresh batch of contenders for the role, which still includes Arjona—but holds a special place for Grace Van Patten, Eva De Dominici, and Sydney Chandler. So, in the midst of this heavenly casting drama, who knows what to believe? DC Studios isn’t talking, leaving us hanging with bated breath for Gunn’s final verdict on this mystery. With sky-high stakes, we await what could be the last role to fill in a film that promises not just superhero flair, but also hints at a deeper connection between Lex Luthor and Superman. Curious about how astrological alignments might affect casting decisions in the chaotic world of Hollywood? Sit tight, my friends. You won’t want to miss the twists ahead! LEARN MORE

Earlier today, Deadline reported that Marisa Abela (Back to Black), Ella Purnell (Fallout), and Adria Arjona (Hit Man) had screen tested for the role of Maxima in Man of Tomorrow, but James Gunn was quick to slam the report as “bullshit.” Now, THR has a fresh list of names who have also reportedly tested for the role. I don’t know what to trust now. The new list of names for Maxima does once again include Arjona, but adds Grace Van Patten (Tell Me Lies), Eva De Dominici (The Cleaning Lady), and Sydney Chandler (Alien: Earth). They are apparently the four finalists for the role.

DC Studios declined to comment, so we’ll be waiting on Gunn’s response. He has said that there’s only one more role left to cast, so this is likely it.

Who is Maxima?

Introduced in the pages of Action Comics No. 645 in 1989 by writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez, Maxima is an alien queen who has been both an antagonist and a potential love interest for the Man of Steel.

Man of Tomorrow

While speaking on the Howard Stern Show last year, Gunn dropped a few story details. “It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” he said. “It’s more complicated than that but. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.

David Corenswet will be back as Superman alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Lars Eidinger is set to play Brainiac, which I’m pretty excited about, and Lanterns star Aaron Pierre will make an appearance as John Stewart. Also expected to return are Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

Production on Man of Tomorrow is gearing up to start later this month, with the film set to be released on July 9, 2027.

Supergirl

Before we get to Man of Tomorrow, the next DCU project to be released in theaters will be Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El, alongside Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) as Ruthye, Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone) as Krem of the Yellow Hill, David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) as Zor-El, Emily Beecham (1899) as Alura, and Jason Momoa as Lobo, a role he has longed to play for years. The film will hit theaters on June 26.

And there’s Lanterns on HBO this August, followed by the Clayface movie on October 23.

So, out of this new Maxima short-list, who would you like to see play the role in Man of Tomorrow?
