Whether it’s family by blood or circumstance, you can’t always choose it, and sometimes the best thing to do is to accept it.

And Mel keeps having some bumps in the road when it comes to RJ, but maybe after RJ Decker Season 1 Episode 5, she’s finally realized that it’s easier to just accept this lovable guy who genuinely cares about all of them into her life.

Besides, the arrests that Mel is scoring because of him have to make her look good, right?

“Burn Notice” was a fun, twisty hour that had me trying to figure out who was after Bryce and his family.

And I have to admit, the Triad psych-out was delightfully tense. If ever there was a solid way to scare the heck out of a person on the run, the threat of the Chinese Triad coming after a guy who has successfully fled them is a creative one.

RJ’s client, Bryce, came to him at his wits’ end, but he really sold the idea that it was Molly’s ex-boyfriend who was coming after and harassing them.

I just knew this would be a case where some ex who didn’t get over the woman he loved wanted payback for a breakup or desired to break up a happy family.

But there is nothing more frustrating than when someone enlists your help without telling you all the pertinent information you need to know.

(Disney/John Merrick)

Bryce sent RJ on a wild goose chase, ha, see what I did there?

And it was just wasted time as the threats intensified and Molly’s concern grew exponentially. I also hate that it made her feel a bit guilty, like she was the reason her family was under such a threat.

That wasn’t fair to her in the least!

RJ piecing together that Bryce was actually a different Bryce on the run was a great turning point, but I also just like seeing how naturally good he is at this gig.

It’s one thing to take photos of people from a distance and try to put together a story from that, but it’s another to succeed at the deep dives that he does. He’s also just generally great with people and sneaking past their defenses.

I was all in on the Triad angle, but then they threw us for a loop when RJ figured out it wasn’t the Triad threatening and scaring Bryce; it was a dad, angry that his son wasn’t in the position he wanted on the baseball team.

Like, what?

(Disney/John Merrick)

Luke, and yes, I’m an Upload Fanatic, so Kevin Bigley will always be Luke to me, really figured out who Bryce was and used that background to blackmail him so his son could play a certain position on a Little League team.

I wasn’t to say that’s preposterous, but I’ve personally seen how parents get about their kids and sports games, so it’s not even that outlandish!

That’s what makes it such an insanely fun twist.

But the worst part was having to figure out how to take this guy down. He really thought he’d get away with MURDER because Bryce was too afraid to go to the police and risk exposure from the triad or whatever else.

He thought they’d be at some kind of impasse with mutually assured destruction, and he’d just be fine. And maybe he would’ve been if it were just the harassment and smaller offenses.

(Disney/John Merrick)

But there was no way RJ could let him get away with murder.

I love that RJ is completely unafraid to lean on those around them and seek their help. If it’s for some greater good, he doesn’t hesitate. There’s no ego or resistance.

He went to Mel and holds her dear as a valued friend, even if she doesn’t return that same energy to him all the time. And he figured out a way to protect Bryce and take the real killer down.

Speaking of Mel, it’s evident that she’s still struggling with RJ’s presence.

Given that she already seems to take issue with his presence in their lives in general, the fact that he’s basically living with them with no signs of moving really has her up in arms.

Some of it does feel rooted in insecurity. RJ and Catherine have such a unique bond that outsiders can’t always make sense of it at first. There’s so much love there that it’s easy to wonder why they ever were apart.

(Disney/John Merrick)

Ironically, that’s probably what I find most appealing about that dynamic.

But Catherine opened up about how they parted ways because they realized they were better as friends. RJ really is her best friend. And she still feels some guilt because she went from being best friends with him to a distance coming between them when she moved on romantically with Mel.

And because she was living her own life and not as present in his as she used to be, she felt like she missed all the signs leading up to him beating up the Ochoa.

She feels like she would have been around, like she usually was, then maybe she could have helped him before he landed in prison for two and a half years.

Catherine really does love big and hard. She’s not wrong for moving on with her life, but I can totally sympathize with her guilt. And her devotion to RJ isn’t even a sense of guilt and duty, but genuine love.

(Disney/John Merrick)

RJ is her family. And by extension, Mel’s family. It’s interesting that RJ, Catherine, hell, even Sofia, see this as clear as day and fully embrace it, but it’s something that Mel has had trouble wrapping her head around

I do love that RJ’s parole officer showed up for that visit and gave Mel an out if she needed it. She seemed so sincere in helping everyone involved and doing what’s best for all of them.

She doesn’t seem like the sort who is deadset on tripping RJ up or waiting for him to scerw up so she can send him back to prison. You can tell she cares about her job and helping her clients.

But she also instantly understood the position that Mel was in and that she may feel uncomfortable and even displaced in her own home.

She didn’t sign up to share her wife and family with her wife’s ex, after all.

(Disney/John Merrick)

It is a sucky position for Mel. She didn’t so much agree to it as had it thrust upon her, and she had to go along with it. And what was supposed to take a week or two has lasted much longer.

But it hasn’t been all bad either. Decker babysits, cooks, and has helped both of them out with work. He’s practically like a giant puppy most days. And he hasn’t pushed or crossed boundaries, which is a relief.

I love the familial elements of this dynamic. And it often frustrates me that Mel is so resistant and so rigid in how she comes across regarding RJ’s status as a felon.

But there’s such a tricky balancing act in ensuring that a lovable character like RJ doesn’t consume their life in such a way that Catherine and Mel, as a pairing, get pushed to the fringes.

I say that because they’re a pairing I’m still patiently waiting to feel attached to, and I’m not there yet.
