In a world where the stars align and horror reigns supreme, Andy and Barbara Muschietti have carved out a cosmic niche that’s hard to ignore. Fresh off their successful reign with Stephen King’s adaptation of IT, the dynamic duo is launching a new genre label, Nocturna, aimed at spotlighting the next generation of horror brilliance. Their inaugural offering, They Will Kill You by Russian director Kirill Sokolov, promises a thrilling blend of horror and action—perfect for those looking to be entertained while peering through their fingers. But how do the alignments of the planets affect our choices? With Mars in energetic motion, perhaps we’ll all be drawn to the adrenaline-fueled escapades awaiting us this weekend at the theaters. Curious about what makes this film a potential big hit? Let’s delve deeper! LEARN MORE
In recent years, Andy and Barbara Muschietti have become two of the biggest names in horror. Their two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s IT was a blockbuster, and they were able to parlay that success into a prequel series, IT: Welcome to Derry, which was a runaway hit when it premiered on HBO Max in the fall.
Now, they’re launching a new genre label, Nocturna, dedicated to boosting exciting new horror talent. Their first production is They Will Kill You, which comes from Russian director Kirill Sokolov. Recently, we sat down with the producing pair to discuss their new label and how Sokolov’s last movie, No Looking Back, encouraged them to make They Will Kill You, a cool horror/action mashup starring Zazie Beetz as Asia Reeves, a woman who tries to rescue her sister from a sprawling apartment building run by a Satan-worshipping cult that has marked her for death.
We were also joined by Kirill Sokolov, who talks about making his Hollywood debut and how, despite having access to all the bells and whistles available on a studio production, he opted to make They Will Kill You using mostly practical effects and gore. Sokolov’s movie went over like gangbusters when it premiered at SXSW last week (read my review here), and it may well prove to be a major hit when WB/New Line releases it in theaters this Friday.
