The fun and familial vibes that are RJ, Catherine, and Mel continue during RJ Decker Season 1 Episode 5, as RJ and Mel work an amusing case, and Catherine protects RJ the best way she knows how.
Sure, maybe she overstepped a tad, but I don’t blame the woman!
On a personal front, I’m still utterly enamored with the dynamic between RJ and his ex-wife. To many, it would seem as if she were still interested in RJ.
And I’m glad that Mel brought it up because, as Catherine’s spouse, it would make sense for her to question the dynamic there and wonder what’s at the heart of RJ and Catherine’s relationship.
People don’t always understand how even romantic dynamics can become strictly platonic, nor do they grasp the nuances of relationships where there’s just something indefinable about their nature.
RJ and Catherine feel like more than exes, though. It’s like they’re best friends, and real family, and Catherine seems like this warm, loving person who finds her people and then holds on tight no matter what happens.
Mel hit the nail on the head when she says that Catherine loves big. If you’re lucky enough to be someone she cares about, it’s a kind of love that can shift and mutate but never die.
Her love for RJ is one of the most interesting things about her, and I love that Mel has learned to accept that for what it is and doesn’t try to interfere or make it something it isn’t.
More importantly, she doesn’t try to make Cath choose between her and RJ.
And to his credit, RJ doesn’t take advantage of any of that, either. He loves Cath just as much, and she’s family to him. That love also extends to her family, even when he gets on Mel’s nerves.
Hearing that Cath was practically catatonic for days after RJ went to prison provides more perspective on why she was so livid about Emi.
All she associates Emi with is being the woman who perjured herself to send RJ away for something he didn’t do, and her being part of a corrupt family, whom Cath clearly has all the skinny on.
Their meeting was intense. Cath is so fearless, and she didn’t hesitate to let Emi know that she’s looked into the Ochoas and knows that they’re shady.
But Emi gave as good as she got. I’m Team Catherine all the way, and from her perspective, I understand why she doesn’t trust Emi as far as she can throw her.
Nevertheless, who doesn’t love a good battle of the wills? Unsurprisingly, Emi had already looked into Cath, too.
Every time RJ Decker brings up Emi’s father, my curiosity ratchets up a notch. When will we get to meet him? Just how bad are the Ochoas outside of Emi? And will Cath be key in taking them down in some way? She’s relentless enough to pursue it.
It was nice to have Emi interact with someone other than RJ, just as it was nice to have RJ take on his own case without leaning on Emi.
Instead, we got more of RJ and Mel. Their sibling dynamic is still amusing, and their constant clashes can make them a great team when they focus.
Every now and then, it still gets frustrating that Mel sees things in such a black-and-white manner. But RJ is rubbing off on her yet.
The case was one that jumped all over the place. We started with RJ taking on a case for his client, Bob, who thought his wife was cheating on him because she was behaving suspiciously and hotter than he was.
I mean, Tamera Mowry is gorgeous. Poor Bob was selling himself short, and also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Louise LOVED Bob.
But she also loved stealing. The porch piracy action was fun, but then they tossed in that explosion, and my jaw dropped.
Fortunately, Louise wasn’t dead, even though she did sustain a bad injury. But Natalie was.
It’s funny how a simple infidelity case turned into a full-blown murder investigation.
But what was pleasing was that Mel didn’t put up too much of a fight when RJ wanted in on this investigation.
Fortunately, they were able to prove that Louise didn’t kill Natalie, but then it spiraled into trying to figure out who did. Once someone attacked Bob, that’s when we had some serious question marks floating around.
And the angle of Louise catching more charges than she should’ve because of accusations of stealing from other wealthy people came into play, too.
This case was definitely messier, with so many things happening at once that I lost the thread a few times.
But we landed on Grant and his wife being behind Natalie’s murder after she wanted to come clean about the death of Amari from ages ago. The husband-and-wife duo was duking it out over who could get the best deal first.
But more importantly, in all of this, Amari’s family got the closure they deserved, and Cath will be writing a nice article about him that will keep the memory of their relative alive and help publicize the community center they created in his honor.
And Lousie and Bob are happy. RJ managed to get them to go light on Louise’s sentence, and it’s just one of many ways he reveals how good-hearted he is.
Even setting Cath up with great stories that simultaneously help people who need them exposes that.
RJ is just such a good human. I love him with my whole heart.
I know we’re rooting for the forbidden love between RJ and Emi, but I kinda do want to see him going on dates or Cath setting him up, for my own amusement.
And Wish’s absence was felt, but it was otherwise a solid episode.
