Critic’s Rating: 3 / 5.0

Sometimes a case doesn’t need to be the most exciting part of the episode, and that’s the case on CIA Season 1 Episode 3.

This case is just a way to put Nikki in trouble, meaning the rest of the team has to work as one to save her.

It’s a chance to see the trust the Fusion Cell has in each other, which is sure to make the mole storyline even more devastating for the innocent members.

A Team That Operates on Trust

It’s somewhat ironic that a team of spies operates on trust, but that’s what we have with the Fusion Cell.

What’s even more ironic is that this team that operates on trust has someone lying to them — and that’s not the mole.

Colin is lying about his whole life, and yet, he is happy to believe that everyone else is telling him the truth.

Everyone is probably the same, and he probably knows that. It’s what makes the team work so well.

What also makes the team work well is that they care about each other.

As soon as Nikki puts herself forward to head to Beijing, Colin worries, knowing how dangerous the situation could be.

I’m not sure the show needed to explain why it was so dangerous, but let’s argue that there are some newbies out there who don’t understand the real-life relations between the United States and China.

Something the explanation did do was make it clear something was going to go wrong, and, for once, it didn’t take long into the episode for that to happen.

Within the first 10 to 15 minutes, Nikki had been arrested, and all of Colin’s fears were coming to life. It put the focus on Colin’s need to find a way to save her.

(Mark Schafer/CBS )

I appreciate that this wasn’t just because Nikki is his boss, and that it’s also linked to Colin’s past losses.

There’s clearly some sort of backstory that still needs to be explained between them and Colin’s life as a spy, but I can take this slow buildup. We don’t need everything explained at once, as long as it’s eventually explained.

CIA Season 1 Episode 3 is the first time Colin feels genuinely emotional throughout.

You can tell he’s terrified for Nikki by the expressions in his eyes and the way he loses control, something we haven’t seen from him yet.

Is this Colin’s tell? Is this the way Bill will be able to figure out whether he is the mole?

How Did Nikki Miss So Much?

Considering Nikki is the Deputy Chief, she managed to let the Chinese spies get a lot of information on her.

The first thing I thought as the photos were placed on the table was that they were from the CIA Series Premiere.

How is it possible that she let someone get so much information without realizing it? How long has someone been following her?

This does tell me that she’s probably not the mole.

(Mark Schafer/CBS )

A mole would spend their time watching everything and everyone around them, just in case someone was on to them. Nikki has been too relaxed in her life.

This could be a red herring, but I’ve never really thought that Nikki was the mole from the beginning.

I could be eating those words soon, but for now, I’m leaning toward someone else in the field office that we haven’t gotten to know yet.

If Nikki were the mole, she’d be very quick to strike a deal with the Chinese, wouldn’t she? She’d at least try, since the Chinese spies would have picked up that she was the mole by now.

Instead, Nikki was visibly upset, realizing that she wasn’t going to be able to talk her way out of her arrest.

(Mark Schafer/CBS )

It was clear that the Chinese had enough information on her to torture her, and as she figured that out, she could only hope that Colin and the team back home would find a way to save her.

There are enough real-life stories to know that that wouldn’t happen easily. Nikki would have known the same as Colin: they’d already traded their Chinese prisoners.

It took time for Nikki’s resolve to weaken, and I give props to Necar Zadegan for slowly building to that.

We can see she’s intoxicated from the alcohol being forced on her, and it’s only then that she lets her emotions show on her face.

(Mark Schafer/CBS )

Some actors can play the getting drunk part too hard, slurring their words a little too much, or being too relaxed, but Zadegan sways just enough to believe this slow slip in her cover.

There’s even the glossiness to her eyes that allows the tears to shine beautifully on the screen.

Now, do I wish that we got to see her have to hold the names the Chinese wanted while under torture? In a way, yes, because that would show us her skills as a spy.

I wouldn’t want to see it on the screen, but I would like to get a sense of why she’s the Deputy Chief, given she was made so easily and spied on for so long. There needs to be some redemption for this failure.

Bill Does What He Needs to Do to Infiltrate the Spies

Over two episodes, we’ve seen Bill get used to the CIA way of doing things, but he hasn’t been comfortable with it.

It’s during CIA Season 1 Episode 3 that he finally sees he needs to fit in, thanks to Jubal’s wise words, making this FBI crossover moment work well.

Realizing that he needs to make the spies think he’s becoming one of them and really gelling with the team.

What better way to get Nikki back?

(Mark Schafer/CBS )

This does feel a little fast, but I have to remind myself that there are only ten episodes to CIA Season 1. Bill’s arc to fit in with the team has to happen fast.

He needs to figure out who the mole is by the end of the season, and that means the team has to trust him. He needs to see some masks slip.

It all works. As Bill annoys other FBI agents to get another Chinese spy to trade for Nikki, he delivers exactly what the Fusion Cell needs to save the day.

We can let Colin off for the backhanded compliment. It’s a clear sign that Bill is in. At least, with Colin.

It should take a little more time with some of the other characters, but it all starts with his partner.

(Mark Schafer/CBS )

The downside for Bill is that he’ll hurt people in the end.

He views Colin as his partner, and he doesn’t like lying to him — and if he’s going to lie, he really needs to stop overexplaining, because everyone will see through that!

There were some genuine questions about whether Bill was right for the job at the beginning, and for a beat, I did question whether Jubal made the right choice.

I have to question whether Bill can see this all the way through to the end, or if something will trip him up.

(Mark Schafer/CBS )

This is where CIA needs to build up Bill’s character a little more. It needs to show us that Bill is right for the job in the long-term and not just for the sake of one case.

The standard case wasn’t as weak as the second episode, and this time, it worked just to keep the focus on the Fusion Cell working together.

I would like to see stronger cases moving forward to help figure out who the mole is, and if CIA gets renewed, the second season needs to offer some more intense cases to make us fear for the characters.

Now it’s over to you!
