Chapter Eighteen – Pisces Threats

I’m talking to my sister.  We’re leaving in the morning.

“…I doubt it will be that bad,” I say.

“I don’t. I hope it not worse. It’s up to him. He better not fuck up. If he fucks up with you, he’s over. You’re the end of the road. I think he’s smart enough to know this, and that’s a good sign. That is why we’re even paying attention to this. XXXXX and I think there’s a chance, this is the real guy for you.”

I don’t answer. I think she’s jaded, but I also know better than to dismiss her. I’m aware of her track record.

“Look. I know you love him. That’s obvious. I want this to work out but I know how you are. I’ve watched you my whole life, and he better not fuck up.”

“What do you mean?” I asked. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something.

“I mean if he fucks up, he’s over.”

“How?”

“Well, Elsa, how old is he? Almost forty, right?”

“He’s thirty-seven.”

“Thirty-seven. Never been married, no kids and now he has a chance. How many chances do you think he gets?”

“I don’t know.”

“I do. “None. His chance is you and he knows it. That’s why he’s trying to do it right. That’s what he keeps telling you, right?”

“Right.”

“Well I think he’s been doing it wrong for awhile,” she says, laughing. “Now. Look at you. You’ve been married.”

“Yes.”

“So you know how. And you’re not almost forty.”

“No.”

“How many men have tried to marry you? How many proposals have you had, anyway?”

I don’t answer.

“Really, Elsa. How many?”

I don’t answer.

She laughs. “Don’t tell me you don’t know. You’ve never counted them?” She laughs and yells to her husband. “Elsa can’t remember how many men proposed to her.”

“Do you remember their names?”

I don’t answer. I don’t think I can. Not on the spot, like this, anyway. Crap! What a thing to ask.

“Oh man! See what I mean?”

“What?”

She yells to XXXXX. “XXXXX! She can’t remember their names. She can’t remember who wanted to marry her.”

I hear her laugh. I imagine her shaking her head and it makes me laugh too. What the fuck. I decide it’s got to be the Neptune transit, because surely I must have this information!

“Look, Elsa. With your 7th house and your stupid dimples, finding someone to marry you is not a problem. If he fucks up, you’ll do what you always do.”

“What’s that?”

She’s incredulous at my stupidity. “Leave! You’ll leave him. You’ll leave and find another man in a week. Two weeks, tops. Even if you don’t want one, you’ll find one. They find you. Crooked lipstick, and all. They don’t care!”

She laughs.

dracula

“Look at the last one. The actor. The Scorpio. He had to pluck your eyebrows for you. You don’t know how! Did he care? He didn’t care. Now you’re gone, because he fucked up. He’s standing around thinking, I sure wish I wouldn’t have fucked up because she was good and she left my ass high and dry and didn’t even look back.”

She’s right.

“He’s thinking, I thought I could fuck up forty times and she’d hang around. I was wrong. Geez. I must be stupid. Yeah. That’s it. I’m a dumbass.”

“He’s thinking that?”

“Fuckin’ A. You made him look good. He looked good when he was standing next to you and trust me, his Leo rising is kicking his own ass today, wishing he could look as good as he did when he was with you. He has to work ten times as hard for his attention now. To be seen, I mean. He knows he fucked up. It’s the same thing with this guy. If he fucks up, you’ll leave him. Then he’ll look around in disbelief. Eventually it’ll dawn on him that you won’t be back, and he’ll wish he didn’t fuck up, but it’s too late.”

“Yeah?”

“Come on, Elsa. You don’t like fools. You give lots of chances, but if someone persists in being an idiot, well then you’re done with them, and let’s face it. When you’re done, your done like dinner. Except, Scott. That guy had legs, I gotta admit. But this is not, Scott. This is a guy who lives in a shack and if he fucks up and treats you bad, then you’ll leave and he gets to stand in a line with the rest of the dummies.”

“Amazing.”

“Look. He’s lucky to have you. He has you in love with him, I can tell. He needs to keep it that way. You don’t ask for much. In fact, you ask for almost nothing. What? A little respect? I’ve never seen you ask anyone for anything, besides a little respect, and for what you offer, if they can’t give that, then fuck them. That’s what I say.”

“What I offer?”

“Yes! Now.” She smokes. “If you go home with him, and these people eat you alive, I’ll hold him personally responsible, and I will be pissed. You can tell him I said that if you want. Not that he needs to worry about me. He needs to worry about you. I’ll be pissed, but so what? I’m a Pisces. What am I going to do? Swim by him? Make a wave? A really big one? Please.”

I laugh.

“You, on the other hand? Well. I don’t think he’ll recover. They never do. You aren’t going to do anything wrong to him. You’re good. You’re going to do good for him. You’ve already gotten him out of a shack, and you haven’t ever lifted your pinky yet. How long has he been there?”

“In his shack? Three years.”

She gasps. “See what I mean. You’ll give him a real life and he needs to do the same for you, and then no problem. I think he’s going to, all right? I like how this guy is treating you, but I’ll say it again. They’re gunning for you, and it isn’t right. They are loading their guns right fucking now and what are you doing? Are you loading yours? Sharpening your knife? No. You are probably wondering what to get them for Christmas.”

Crap. She’s right. That’s exactly what I’m wondering.

“And you’re sitting in a shack in the middle of nowhere planning to heal their son’s pain from twenty years ago. Not just one of them, but both of them! She’s got two kids crippled for twenty years and what’s the bitch mother done to help them? Not a fucking thing.” She hits her cigarette. “Now you’re going to help them. You’ll do it too, right?”

“Yeah. I’m pretty sure I can.”

“Fuckin’ A. You can and you will. You’re willing to get in there and get yourself dirty when no one has bothered to do shit for them, for twenty years, so these mother-fuckers can just show you a little respect or else.”

“You sure are jaded.”

“Yeah, yeah I know I am. Look, Elsa. I’m not saying this is going to happen, but it could. Personally, I like how this is going. He’s not a dummy. He knows you’re going to be under pressure and he’s not expecting you to sit in the middle of that bitches den without a break.”

She smokes.

“I can see what he’s doing. Three hours here, then get the fuck out. Four hours there and then he’s scheduled a little break for you. One of the nights, you’re going out alone, right?”

“Yeah. And maybe we’re gonna skip to New York, real quick.”

“Good. See, the guy is in love with you and he knows his family sucks. This is why he’s doing it the way he’s doing it. Get in and get out as fast as you can. And the brother is traveling with you too, right?”

Three amigos

“Yeah. For most the trip.”

“Okay, so it sounds like you’re three amigos to me. I’m sure they’re going to be glad to have you along. I mean, they do this every year, right? They have to go home for Thanksgiving, and I’m sure it always sucks. So this time they’re bringing a muse, and let’s face it. There is no better muse in the world than you.”

“You think that?”

“Fuck yeah. Fuckin’ A, Elsa. You’re pure entertainment. Even XXXXX would admit this and he hates you.”

“Tell him to kiss my ass.”

“That’s better. The regular, Elsa emerges from the fog. How many more weeks of this transit?”

“Months.”

“Okay. Well we’ll just have to see where you end up. But it’s sounding good. He takes care of you and you take care of him. And his brother too, since you like him.”

“I do. He’s a good guy.”

“Okay. Well I’m sure you’ll help them both. If anyone can, it’s you. There isn’t a motherfucker in this land that you can’t help one way or the other. Just try to call us while you’re gone, okay? We’re going to have a hard time going four days without an update.”

“Will do.”
