In 2023, the actor revealed that working on “The Crowded Room” was “a tough time for sure,” leading to his decision to step back from Hollywood.

“We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before,” he told Extra. “And then on top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure.”

Holland then said because of “how difficult” the show was, he decided to take a “year off.”

In several interviews, Tom Holland has opened up about his decision to quit drinking, explaining that it wasn’t triggered by any single dramatic incident but rather by a deeper realization about his relationship with alcohol. During an appearance on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast in early 2023, Holland shared that he initially took on the “Dry January” challenge, only to find it far more complex than he had anticipated.

“I didn’t one day wake up and say, ‘I’m giving up drinking forever.’ I just said, ‘I’m gonna do Dry January,’ and all of a sudden I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I’m not as in control as I thought I was,’” he admitted.

After successfully completing the month, Holland became aware of just how much he had been leaning on alcohol and chose to extend his sobriety beyond January. What began as a one-month challenge gradually evolved into a year-long commitment and, ultimately, a lasting lifestyle change.

In the U.K., “Drinking is like breaking bread,” Holland admitted. “It’s not about quenching thirst ’cause quenching thirst is about survival. But drinking is living.” While taking this into consideration and reflecting on his own struggles with sobriety, Holland came up with a plan to launch a non-alcoholic beverage line called Bero.

“I definitely had to take myself out of situations that I felt would put me in a compromised place,” he explained. “One of the biggest inspirations for Bero was to help people like myself reintegrate into that social environment where they might feel like they’re not necessarily welcome.”
