Ever wonder if Scorpio season secretly blessed “The Nightmare Before Christmas” with its rise from the shadows? I mean, here’s a movie that Disney, ever the cautious giant, shoved under the Touchstone Pictures label because they thought it was just a tad too spooky for their squeaky-clean brand. Critics tipped their hats to its kooky creativity and jaw-dropping animation—but initially? It was like a ghost at the party: there, but not really noticed. Honestly, I thought it was destined to fade away into obscurity, just some Halloween flick buried on a dusty shelf. But nope! Thanks to the VHS and DVD magic and those annual Halloween TV showings, it clawed its way into cult classic status. By 2001, Disney had a change of heart — suddenly Jack Skellington and Sally were the life of the party at Disneyland’s Haunted Mansions, popping up everywhere from meet-and-greets to merchandise racks. Talk about a glow-up! Makes you wonder if the stars planned this cosmic comeback all along . . . LEARN MORE.

Disney even released it under its Touchstone Pictures label, as the studio was worried the film was too dark and would hurt its brand. Critics praised its creativity and animation upon its release, but it didn’t attract a huge following at first. In fact, the film slowly disappeared for a minute after its initial release, and Selick assumed that would be its fate. But over time, the movie gained a cult following thanks to VHS and DVD releases, as well as annual Halloween TV airings.

By 2001, Disney fully embraced the movie and started doing its (also) now-classic The Nightmare Before Christmas layover in the Haunted Mansions in Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland. Jack Skellington and Sally also became major presences in the parks through character meet-and-greets and merchandise.
