Lizzo Sued Over A Song Snippet That References Sydney

Although many fans have been making fun of Sydney Sweeney’s controversial “good jeans” American Eagle ad, Lizzo might be the first to get sued over it. According to Variety, Lizzo performed a portion of an unreleased song, apparently titled “I’m Goin’ In Till October,” that sampled the song “Win or Lose (We Tried),” which is represented for publishing in the case by a company named The GRC Trust.

One of the lines in the song is “I got good jeans like I’m Sydney.” Lawyers for GRC write in their complaint that Lizzo and her label, Atlantic, “obtained profits they would not have realized but for their infringement of GRC’s rights” and that they “attempted informal resolution of the dispute but reached an impasse.” However, a rep for Lizzo told the BBC that they were “surprised” that The GRC Trust filed the lawsuit because “the song has never been commercially released or monetized.”

American Eagle Stands By Their Sydney Sweeney Ad

Even though the pun plays on “jeans” and “genes,” American Eagle CEO Jay Schottenstein insists that the brand “can’t run from fear” and told executives and employees to “remain calm and not comment” on the viral campaign that had everyone from Lizzo to U.S. President Donald Trump weighing in.

“Sydney Sweeney is worth every single dollar that we invested,” American Eagle chief marketing officer Craig Brommers told Marketing Brew in early September. “Every single marketing metric that I look at is flashing a green light, and we’re only six weeks in.”

Sydney Won’t Respond To Ad Outrage

While promoting TIFF 2025, Sydney refused to address the controversial American Eagle ad. Instead, she wanted to focus on promoting her new film, “Christy,” which is about the famed boxer, Christy Martin.

“I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it,” Sydney told Vanity Fair in an interview published in early September. “I’m not there to talk about jeans.” She added, “The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”
