Shrek 5 Delayed Until Summer 2027—Is Something Rotten in the Swamp or Just Shrek’s Star-Studded Cosmic Clock?

Added on August 11, 2025 inMovie News Cards

Well, isn’t this a cosmic shuffle worthy of a Mercury retrograde hiccup? Shrek 5 has decided to take a leisurely detour from its originally stampeding Christmas 2026 release, now sauntering into theaters on June 30, 2027. With Pluto stirring up transformational chaos and Jupiter flexing its expansive muscle, Universal and DreamWorks must’ve thought—why battle the holiday stampede of Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part III, and Ice Age 6 when they can bask in a sunnier, less crowded June? Plus, this move makes room for an Illumination mystery flick to dance onto the scene in April 2027. Zendaya’s stepping into some ogre-sized shoes as Shrek’s daughter, while our old friends Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz reunite for the fairy tale remix we’ve eagerly awaited since Shrek Forever slimed screens back in 2010. Directed by seasoned charmers Walt Dohrn, Conrad Vernon, and Brad Ableson, the film promises to bring all the wit, warmth, and ogre-sized heart with an astrological wink—because sometimes even the stars urge you to change your plans. Curious about all the nitty-gritty? LEARN MORE

Shrek 5 is on the move, and has departed its Dec. 23, 2026 date to Wednesday, June 30, 2027.

It will no longer open around the crowded holiday corridor featuring Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part III and Ice Age 6, which all open Dec. 18, 2026.

In a twinned move, Universal shifted an untitled Illumination film from Shrek 5‘s old date to April 16, 2027.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation are behind Shrek 5, which makes the first in the main series since Shrek Forever in 2010. (The studio has also released a pair of Puss n Boots spinoffs voice starring Antonio Banderas.)

Zendaya joins the cast as Shrek’s daughter, with mainstays Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) back.

Shrek vets Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon direct, along with Minions: The Rise of Gru co-director Brad Ableson.

Shrek, based on the book by William Steig, launched as a film franchise with the Oscar-winning 2001 feature. It centered on an ogre named Shrek, who falls for Fiona, the princess of Far Far Away who has been cursed, trapped in the body of an ogre. Donkey provided comic relief, pathos and friendship to Shrek, with the film praised for its humorous twist on fairy-tale tropes.
