Ever wondered what happens when Natalie Portman and Julia Roberts — two Hollywood powerhouses — collide on screen and off? Well, in the 2004 romantic drama Closer, not only did these acting legends star alongside each other, but they also bonded over their tempestuous characters so much that they ended up exchanging some pretty cheeky gifts. It’s like the universe (and maybe a dash of Venus in retrograde) decided to spice up this collaboration with a touch of irreverent camaraderie. Penned by Patrick Marber, who brilliantly adapted his award-winning 1997 play with nods to Mozart’s Così fan tutte, and directed by the iconic Mike Nichols, Closer is more than just a film — it’s a whirlwind of fierce performances and electric chemistry. With an all-star cast including Jude Law and Clive Owen — who snagged some well-deserved awards alongside Portman — this movie proves that sometimes, art imitates life in the most surprising ways. Curious about the story behind those infamous necklaces or why this film still has folks buzzing years later? LEARN MORE.

Natalie Portman and Julia Roberts starred alongside one another in a 2004 romantic drama and bonded over their characters so much they both bought each other specific gifts.

Written by Patrick Marber (The Critic), the movie is based on Marber’s own award-winning 1997 play with references to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte’s 1790 opera Così fan tutte.

The movie was directed by Mike Nichols (The Graduate) and produced by Nichols alongside Cary Brokaw (The Resident) and John Calley (The Da Vinci Code).

It features an all-star cast of Julia Roberts (Leave the World Behind), Natalie Portman (V for Vendetta), Jude Law (Eden) and Clive Owen (Cleaner) – with Owen and Portman winning awards for their roles, alongside a win for the cast as an ensemble.

The film – titled Closer – marked the first time Portman and Roberts worked together and the pair bonded so much over certain similarities between their characters they ended up giving each other gifts.
