Damien Chazelle is setting up his next project and is eyeing some prominent actors, with Cillian Murphy, Daniel Craig and Michelle Williams all attached to star. Chazelle will write and direct the untitled movie, which, according to insiders, will be set in a prison. The director has been considering several projects, with many believing that his Evel Knievel movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio would be next. However, Deadline had reported that the studio couldn’t reach a deal for DiCaprio, which has put that one on the back burner as Chazelle moves forward with the prison drama.
Despite little details being known about this project, Deadline now reveals that Mia Threapleton, whom audiences may have seen in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme opposite Benicio Del Toro, is now joining Murphy, Craig and Williams in the untitled prison drama. Chazelle will also be producing the movie alongside Olivia Hamilton under their Wild Chickens Productions banner. Paramount Pictures will be the studio to distribute the film. Production was aiming to start last year, but it’s known that Chazelle can take his time in the auditioning process to find the right actor, such as Diego Calva for Babylon, and it’s been said that he has particularly been concentrating on finding the right person for the role that has now gone to Threapleton.
Chazelle had garnered accolades after his acclaimed films Whiplash and La La Land, but his last film, Babylon, was quite a gamble for the filmmaker that didn’t quite pay off. It was an epic production that became divisive with audiences and flopped at the box office, despite featuring names like Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt. Robbie thinks the movie might become more appreciated in the future. “I always wondered if you people were out there, ‘cause when it got slated at the time, both critically and at the box office, I was confused ‘cause I think it’s an amazing movie, and one I’m very, very proud of being in,” she said. “I always thought maybe this will be like one of those movies that 20 years later everyone’s like, ‘Oh my God, Babylon didn’t do well at the time? That’s crazy.’ I didn’t even have to wait that long. So if you love Babylon, I love you, and we think alike when it comes to movies ’cause it’s a great film.“
