Are you ready for some high-flying Mark Wahlberg action? Oh wait… not so fast. Remember when we were all eagerly circling *October 18, 2024* on our calendars for the release of *Flight Risk*, Mel Gibson’s first directorial gig since *Hacksaw Ridge*? Well, it seems Lionsgate just pulled a mid-air U-turn on us—hold onto your tray tables—the release has been delayed to *January 24, 2025*. If you’re like me, I’m sure you’re already thinking, “Really? We have to wait ANOTHER three months?” Sigh. But hey, mid-budget action flicks tend to fare pretty well in the post-holiday haze. Just look at David Ayer’s *The Beekeeper*. So maybe January isn’t a total nosedive?
Now, the film features Wahlberg as a pilot transporting an Air Marshall (Michelle Dockery) and—wait for it—a fugitive played by Topher Grace (yes, *That 70s Show* Topher Grace) through the rough Alaskan wilderness. And of course, things take a turn for the worse, because let’s be honest, if they didn’t, it wouldn’t be such a thrill ride, would it? With tensions high and trust shattered, we’re in for a not-so-smooth flight—FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS, people! Plus, Wahlberg stepped WAY out of his comfort zone for this one. Our friend Chris Bumbray from *CinemaCon* said Wahlberg is playing “WAY against type”—he even shaved his head for this. I can only imagine the looks on people’s faces when they saw him bald. Total game-changer, right?
Oh, and did I mention Mel Gibson cranks up the crazy factor for Wahlberg? According to Bumbray, Gibson turns up the intensity, making poor Mark look like he’s about to snap throughout the entire movie. The trailer confirms it—Wahlberg looks wild, tense, and—dare I say—kinda terrifying in the best way possible.
Now, don’t despair because *Flight Risk* isn’t flying solo on January 24, 2025. It’s touching down alongside some intriguing flicks, including a horror film *Screamboat* (think Mickey Mouse going rogue… yeah, it’s THAT wild) and *Inheritance*—a thriller starring Phoebe Dynevor and Rhys Ifans. Still not convinced the move to January is a stroke of genius? Well, at least we’re dodging the October insanity that includes a whopping six other movies, including *Smile 2*. October 18? SO overcrowded.
And if you’re a die-hard Mel Gibson fan, no worries—he’s apparently also working on *Lethal Weapon 5*. Yeah, that’s right, the ol’ Riggs is wielding the megaphone on that one too. You can almost hear him say, “I’ve got a lot of fun with that screenplay—it’s GOOD!” So, who knows, maybe 2025 will be the year we get two Gibson films instead of just one. Now that would be something worth waiting for.
Anyway, mark your calendars (again) and buckle up for the action-thriller turbulence set to arrive in January 2025. Until then, maybe brush up on your *That 70s Show* trivia for Topher Grace’s big moment.

Flight Risk, the action thriller which marks Mel Gibson’s first time in the director’s chair since Hacksaw Ridge was supposed to be released on October 18th, but Lionsgate announced today that they have pushed that release back to January 24, 2025. While this delay is disappointing, mid-budget action movies such as Flight Risk can do well in January; David Ayer’s The Beekeeper is a recent example.
Directed by Mel Gibson and written by Jared Rosenberg, Flight Risk finds Wahlberg playing a pilot transporting an Air Marshall (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar, and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.”
Our own Chris Bumbray was able to see a trailer for Flight Risk at CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier this year and teased that Wahlberg is playing “WAY against type” in the movie. “He even shaved his head to look like he has a bald pate,” Bumbray wrote. “Looks like a really tight kickass thriller, and Gibson REALLY makes Walhberg look crazy in this.” We finally got to see the trailer for ourselves this summer, and yep, this is Wahlberg as we’ve never seen him before.
The new release date will see Flight Risk open alongside Screamboat, a horror reimagining of Disney’s Steamboat Willy, in which a murderous version of Mickey Mouse brings death to the passengers of a late-night ferry. Inheritance, a thriller starring Phoebe Dynevor and Rhys Ifans, and Valiant One, an action thriller starring Chase Stokes and Lana Condor, will also open on the same date. Still, it’s less busy than the film’s previous date, which would have found it opening alongside six other movies, including the highly anticipated Smile 2.
Gibson’s next directorial outing could be the long-awaited Lethal Weapon 5. “I’m going to direct the fifth film in the Lethal Weapon series. You know, Richard Donner, who did the other four, sadly passed away. He was a good friend, and he kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on that one,” Gibson said earlier this summer. “It’ll be an honor for me to do that. He [Richard Donner] had gotten a fair way into the screenplay, so we’ve used what was there, and we kept poking at it, working at it a little. I’m pretty happy with it, it’s good, I had a lot of fun doing it.“
