Isn’t it just cosmic how Mariah Carey — the diva who famously loses track of days like a true Pisces adrift in a sea of glitter — only just caught wind that Katy Perry blasted off to space back in April? Now, I can’t help but wonder if Mercury in retrograde played a sneaky part in Mariah’s delayed newsflash, leaving her floating in a celestial bubble of her own. While Katy was busy orbiting Earth and serenading the stars for a solid 11 minutes, Mariah was here, completely bewildered, asking if it was even real. Honestly, can you blame her? In a world hapless astronauts and pop stars collide, sometimes it’s a relief to just stay grounded, or at least in your own orbit. So, what’s the gossip when stargazers and superstars collide? Buckle up — it’s out of this world. LEARN MORE
Mariah Carey had an iconic reaction when she found out Katy Perry went to space.
And I’m not talking about her reaction when Blue Origin set off, I’m talking about this week, with the singer only just learning about it, apparently.
Carey is currently in the UK following her performance at Brighton Pride last weekend and she’s been giving some memorable quotes to the press.
The ‘Fantasy’ singer famously lives in her own little bubble, because obviously, the world revolves around Mariah Carey.
More than just the Queen of Christmas, she’s happily admitted to never knowing ‘what day it is’, so who was she to know Perry decided to go up to Space for a whole 11 minutes earlier this year?
I mean, I can’t believe it’s nearly been four months since that oh-so-monumental flight.
I wish I was as oblivious as Mariah to be honest. (Blue Origin)
While people have questioned just what it actually achieved, the all-female flight crew went into orbit on 14 April, with Perry revealing her tour set list and having a sing among the likes of Gayle King and Kerianne Flynn.
Lauren Sanchez organised the line-up on her now-husband Jeff Bezos’ New Shepard NS-31 mission and it became quite the viral and controversial thing.
But those kinds of things don’t quite make it into the Mariah Carey bubble, it seems.
The ‘Obsessed’ singer was being interviewed by Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2 yesterday (7 August) when the revelation was made.
“Would you fancy going to space?” the host asked. “You know, like Katy Perry did?”
But Carey seemed pretty confused as she responded: “Did she go to space?”
“Mm-hmm… not for long,” Mills answered.
“Where’d she go?” the artist asked as he tried to explain the logics of the 11-minute trip.
“Into orbit and back,” a baffled Carey repeated, as even the host seemed confused over what Perry actually did.
“She’s like floating in the… and this is true?” she continued, seeming to think it was as fake newsy as it still sounds.
“Wow, alright Katy,” she said, reassured that the ‘E.T.’ singer really did go up there. “I’m not mad at her, that’s pretty amazing.”
But would the ‘Emotions’ singer do the same?
“I think I’ve done enough,” Carey said.
I mean, fair enough.
Iconic from the singer with over 30 years in the business, to be honest.
And one user commented on Instagram: “I honestly wish I was as oblivious to the whole thing as Mariah clearly is.”
