What do you get when Mercury is in retrograde, Mars is throwing a tantrum, and the world’s most iconic drummer is facing battles the cosmos never warned us about? I’ll tell you what—a tough week for Capricorns and, apparently, Phil Collins. Honestly, if the planets have any say, today’s star chart would read: “Rest, hydrate, and avoid spontaneous drum solos.” In a twist of fate crueler than a tabloid prediction, Phil’s now navigating life with a 24-hour nurse, bravely opening up about his health spirals, surgeries, and a cocktail of curveballs that even 1980s astrology columns couldn’t see coming. Is there such a thing as a retrograde for knees or kidneys? Asking for a friend—and for Phil. As he shares the unfiltered reality behind the headlines and the hope that, just maybe, the old dog’s still got a soundtrack or two in him, you can feel both the gravity and the gallows humor in it all. Ready for a read that’s part confessional, part cosmic reality check? LEARN MORE.

Phil Collins has revealed he’s living under 24-hour care amid “ongoing” health issues.

In a new five-part interview on BBC Two’s Eras, with the final episode set to drop on Jan. 26, the Oscar-winning musician opened up about health problems he’s faced over recent years, which include kidney issues and undergoing five knee surgeries.

“It’s an ongoing thing,” Collins said of his health. “I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should. I’ve had challenges with my knee. I had everything that could go wrong with me, did go wrong with me. I got COVID in hospital — my kidneys started to back up, you know, everything that started that could, all seemed to converge at the same time. I had five operations on my knee now — I’ve got a knee that works and I can walk, albeit with assistance, you know, crutches or whatever.”

After enduring a spinal injury in 2007, the “In the Air Tonight” singer has faced health issues that have prevented him from performing. In 2017, he had to postpone a London performance after suffering a fall as a result of “drop foot,” which he acquired following surgery.

In the Eras episode, Collins noted that his drinking contributed to kidney problems. He also shared that he is now two years sober.

“I’d probably been drinking too much, and so my kidneys were messed up, you know. I enjoyed coming off tour, coming off the road, but I thought, right, I’m gonna do all those things that I couldn’t do,” Collins continued. “I wasn’t one of those guys that sort of stayed up all night drinking. I’d drink during the day, but I guess I had too much of it. I was never drunk, although I fell over a couple of times. But, it is just one of those things that happened and it all caught up with me and I spent months in hospital.”

Collins also teased a potential return to music in some form. “I’ve got some things that are half-formed or were never finished, and a couple of things that were finished, which I like,” he said. “So, you know, maybe life in the old dog. Yeah. You’ll see.”
