HBO‘s upcoming Harry Potter TV series will have a new original score composed by the prolific Hans Zimmer, and Bleeding Fingers Music, a composer collective that he co-founded.
Bleeding Fingers was founded by Zimmer, Russell Emanuel and Steven Kofsky, and is a collective of composers who create original scores for film, TV and creative projects.
Bleeding Fingers composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman will work with Zimmer on the score for the Harry Potter series, which will debut on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.
Zimmer, of course, is one of the best known and most prolific composers in history, with film credits that include Inception, The Lion King, Dune, Black Hawk Down, Gladiator and dozens and dozens of other films (he won Oscars for Dune and Lion King). His TV credits include Chief of War and docuseries like Planet Earth II and Frozen Planet.
“The musical legacy of Harry Potter is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team on a project of this magnitude,” Zimmer said in a statement. “The responsibility is something that myself, Kara Talve and Anže Rozman do not take lightly. Magic is all around us, often just beyond reach, but as in the world of Harry Potter, you simply must look for it. With this score we hope to bring audiences that little bit closer to it whilst honoring what has come before.”
The Harry Potter series is arguably the most hotly-anticipated TV show in development anywhere in the business right now, with plans to focus each season around a book in J.K. Rowling’s best-selling series. The show is expected to take a deeper dive into the world of Harry Potter than the feature films were, given the opportunity to write around an entire season’s worth of episodes.
The show has been cast, with new talent set to play the children, and established names like John Lithgow, Nick Frost and Janet McTear playing many of the adults. Warwick Davis will also reprise his role as Hogwarts Professor Filius Flitwick.
The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
