Chapter 30: It’s Hell, When Wallflowers Come To Life

I already knew, Shack, was wrestling over my ring. He’d told me, himself. He said he was trying to work it out and he thought he’d be able to.

“If she doesn’t want to give it to you, let her keep it,” I said.

“She does want to give it to me, but my sister is giving her hell. My brother told me to just get you a ring myself, and I will. But I have to try to get this right, first. My mother should give me the ring, because it’s my ring. This is indisputable. So let’s say she doesn’t do it – my sister wins?”

“Yeah?”

“Then we get married and we’re happy. We have a couple of kids and she loves them; she loves you and if that happens, she will have to live with the fact, she denied you, and her son, what was rightfully, ours. Well, rightfully, mine, but I’m to give it to my wife of my choosing – that’s you!”

I laughed. “Makes sense,” I said.

“Thank you. I’m glad you understand. I know it’s taken some time.  Time, I’ve not got to waste, when she should have given the ring to me when we were there, visiting. Had she done that, I might have turned to you, right then and there, and asked you to marry me.”

My eyes widened, imagining that scene! My sister would have enjoyed that episode.

“Probably not, because, that ring is ugly. It’s just awful. I have to fix that and I will. I just want you to know, I thought to do this. I was expecting her to give it to me, but she didn’t. Because she didn’t do what she should have done, we are now having these stupid conversations.”

“They’re stupid, because everyone with a brain, knows that ring is mine, to give to my wife. My sister has nothing to do with this, but she won’t stay out of it. I’m starting to hate her, she’s being such a bitch. I don’t want to hate my sister and I’ve managed not to, so far, but my patience is wearing thin. I’m sure yours is, as well, but hopefully you won’t hate her either. Do you hate my sister?”

“No, not at all. She’s not doing this to me; she’s doing it to you.”

He nodded. “Yes, she is. Elsa, this won’t go on forever. I’m going to try for a little while longer. If I can’t get her to relent, I will get you a ring, a nice ring, like you got for me. We’ll move on with our plans. Is this okay with you?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. Thank you. Thank you for understanding. I appreciate your faith in me and your patience, which is… supernatural. I‘m not going to let you down, I promise. Do you believe me? Do you trust me to take care of this?”

“I do!”

phone

“Good! See, I’m on the phone all day. I’m supposed to be working, so I do that, then at lunch, I call my mother to try to work it out. She keeps me on the phone a long time. She won’t let me go. She knows I won’t hang up on her. She also knows I want to hang up on her!”

I groan.

“As soon as she hangs up, she calls my brother. She won’t get off the phone with him, either. When he does get free, he calls me, wanting me to call our mother and fix this so she’ll quit bugging him! So then I call her to do what my brother asks and it starts the loop all over again.”

“It sounds stressful.”

“It is stressful. This is the reason I am coming home, stressed, which is not fair to you. I am going to wrap this up and it will be soon.”

“I understand you want to spare your mother, regret, but just so you know, it’s okay with me, if she does not give me the ring.” I thought of the father’s spite house; stuffed with the ill-fitting furniture that had been purchased for the family home he left. “It’s her ring to give or not give. I don’t want a family strife, ring”.

He laughed. “I’m not going to give you a family strife ring. It’s not a strife ring. It is MY ring. I almost stole it, when we were there, because it is mine! She said she would give it to me when we visited and as you can know, she did not. I was mad! This why I was quiet for a lot of that trip.  I’m sorry for that. I was fuming, but I didn’t want you to suffer. You had enough you had to deal with. I didn’t steal it, because I wanted her to voluntarily give me the ring. I want her to do it, because she loves me and you, because you are my wife, and because she knows it is the right and honorable thing to do. Do you understand?”

“I do.”

“Okay. Now, do you mind, if I hear some music? You can hear it with me, of course. You won’t have a choice. It’s loud,” he said, grinning. “But do you mind? I really need to relax. I need some music right now, is it okay?”

“Of course.”

“Okay. Thank you. I hope you’ll stay and listen with me. I will play some things for me, some things for you and some things for us. Okay? I know you should be first, but I’m doing it this way because this is how this happened. I was here and then there was you and now there is us. When we have kids, I’ll have music for them, too. This is our family music. I’m putting it together. If you’d rather go lie down in our bedroom, that’s okay too. I’ll be in there in about an hour”.

“Staying.”

“All right. Good. That’s my preference. We’ll just sit here on the ear height couch, as you call it. I get to be in the center, because I can hear the difference, if I’m not. Okay?”

“Okay, if I can lay my head in your lap and flop my feet over, or curl up. That’s the only way.”

He laughed. “Thank you. Elsa, I can’t thank you enough. I need this music, like you wouldn’t believe.”

wall flower

I called my sister.

“Shack’s brother stopped by,” I said.

“For what?

“He spilled,” I said.

“What? He actually said something to you?”

“No. I said, he spilled.”

“Meaning… he came to life? Did the flower detach from the wall and decide to live a little.”

“He’s not a wallflower. He’s something else.”

“He is a wallflower, but I know you like him, so I will refrain from calling him what he is. What did Shack’s brother say? What did he spill?”

“He doesn’t like, Shack calling him all the time. He hates it; he’s sick of it.”

“No shit,” she said, taking a drag on her cig.

“No shit. He wants me do all this wife stuff for, Shack. He does not want to be bothered… unless it’s me doing the bothering”

“What!? Can you translate that, please?”

“He was dropping off the forms for the stolen checks. Apparently, if I would not have offered to do this, he would have wound up doing it.”

“I can see that.”

“Well, he doesn’t want to do this stuff. Apparently, he’s told, Shack, to get a wife for a long time. Now he has one and he wants me to be released from… from all the help requests.”

“I get it. He’s growing his spine and he wants you to help him. You’re going to help him, right?”

“Of course. We have a plan, but there’s more. He talked to me about astrology.”

“He’s interested in it?”

“I don’t think so, though he may become interested. But this is something else. It turns out, he’s been listening to me on the phone… talking to Sonia, for example.”

“I see. So wallflowers have ears!” she said, snorting. “Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.”

“Yes, he has ears.” I laughed, thinking of, Sprout, pointing to her ears, in regard to her husband’s loud voice. “The whole family has ears and they also have mouths, which I will get to. I don’t think he was doing anything bad, listening in. If I’m talking in a shack, I’m going be overheard.”

“Does he hear our conversations?”

“No. Because I call when I have privacy. But, Sonia, calls whenever she has a crisis. I take the call and talk to her.  She’s in a crisis.”

“Okay, so he’s listening to you on the phone and he’s telling you about it, why?”

“He thinks I am very good at astrology. He said can’t believe the things I think of to say. He’s astounded.

“Is he flattering you? Why would he flatter you?

“No, he’s not flattering me. He’s right. She very hard at times and I can talk to her. He’s exactly right. That’s not the point of this.”

“What is the point, little sister? How about we get to it, then?”

“He says I am going to be an internet astrologer.”

“Whaaat? How does he know that? Elsa, tell me what he said.”

“He said, I need to get a computer and write on the internet and I will succeed as an astrologer; he’s sure of it.”

“Well, so am I! You’re telling me he can see what I can see?”

“I think so.”

“Well, motherfucker. That’s quite a gift, he’s got. I thought I was the only one who could see that. Did you say anything about me to him?”

“No.”

“Reason?”

“He was spilling.”

She laughed, then I laughed, and then we both laughed.

“I don’t mean that, how you might be thinking. I’m saying this was not a conversation. This was a spill, on his end.”

“Like he came over, deciding to tell you this stuff.”

“Yes. He was communicating, I was receiving. He was deliberate. This is what he communicated.”

“Anything else?”

“No. He was just very clear – I need a computer, I should get one, and further, I will be successful with what I want to do. Oh! And he believes in me, but not everyone does.”

“Hmm. I wonder who the non-believers are. You didn’t ask. I know, I know. He was spilling. Well whoever they are, they’re wrong. Little brother and I are right. Does, Shack, believe in you?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never asked him.”

“Figures. But I know you let people stew in their juices. I would like to know, but, I can’t complain. You have provided much, today, Elsa. I’m going to have to mull all this. To be honest, I didn’t see this coming. I thought, little brother, was little loser, who you liked, so I had to be nice. Now I find out, he can do what I can do. Not only that, he may be better at it than I am.”

computer

“You think?”

“He saw the computer. Did I see the computer? I did not. But he did and it’s obvious.  Mars Mercury is fast. And here I am telling you to write with a fucking pen! I don’t know how I feel about this. Am I pissed off, because he’s better at this than I am?”

I laugh, while she thinks.

“No, I am not mad. I am curious though. How come I missed this in the chart?”

“Well, the chart you have is off. I got an exact birth time from the mom. The birth certificates. She pulled them out.”

“And you didn’t tell me this?”

“I did. You ignored me.”

“That’s because I thought he was a wallflower. I know better now and I should have already known, because you like him. You do like a lot of losers, but the losers you like; there is something about them, that attracts you.”

“You shouldn’t be calling people, losers.”

“You’re right. I’m getting my ass kicked today, aren’t I?”

wallflower

“Do you want to look at the chart?”

“Fuckin’ A, I want to look at the chart. What changed?”

“Not much. He’s still got a ton of Virgo, sun, Venus, Mercury and Pluto, in the 12th house. Sun, Mercury and Pluto are conjunct. That’s powerful! It’s a tight conjunction. Rising is Libra.”

“Okay, so he’s gets info from the ethereal. I see that, but where is his moon?”

“Moon Jupiter in Sagittarius, opposite Mars in Gemini.”

“What? That’s my chart. Why didn’t I see this? Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I did. I think this is your Neptune transit.”

“I’d say so. I know what happened. You ran down all that Virgo and I tuned out. Virgo wallflowers are not interesting. I should have known something was up. If he was what I thought he was, you’d have quit mentioning him. But you have brought him in on every conversation. Apparently for reasons beyond, charity.”

“Apparently. He has a strong presence. He’s just quiet. But he communicates with me.”

“Besides his spilling?”

“Yes?”

“How does he do that?”

“He’s subtle. I know what he’s thinking and how he feels. Say, he’s going to leave or he wants to. He tips me to this some way and I help him get what he wants. Like, oh, Shack’s brother! You probably have email waiting!”

Virgo postcard

She laughed. “You mean, you help a 12th house Virgo, escape? This is fucking hilarious. Fucking Virgos in general are hilarious, but this takes the cake. Shack doesn’t know, does he?”

“No, I don’t think he does. This is a lost child thing,” I added.

“Son-of-a-bitch! So the little siblings have this going on under both our noses… which means I am, Shack, in this. Do you already know this? You do, don’t you?”

“Yes.”

“Well don’t tell me. Let me figure it out myself, so I don’t feel so fucking stupid.” I laugh when I hear her slap her forehead. “I got it! Oh my God, we do have a lot in common,” she said.

“Like what? What are you thinking?”

“Well, we’re both star athletes, for one thing. We both think we know everything. We both have little siblings that are smarter than us and we’re both mad as fuck about it, but we try not to be?”

“Nice start.”

“Start? You bitch.”

“Yeah, I know, but you have been riding me for weeks.”

“That’s true. XXXXX! Elsa just handed me my ass… with little brother’s help. The wallflower! Elsa, I know there is more, but don’t give it to me yet. I need to assimilate this and also go back and see what other glaring shit, I missed.”
