Chapter 31 – Bad, Worse, Then Better

Shack continued to talk to his family; his mood darkened by the day. Calling him a dog with a bone, in regards to this ring, did not go over so well. I got my first, glare, from Shack, which of course made me chuckle.

“It’s my ring,” he said. “Mine, not hers.”

When he said that, I realized I was outside of this. There was nothing for me to do. If he wanted to chew awhile longer, okay. He was well aware we needed a ring to get married. This was his job and the clock was ticking.

The whole scene reminded me of when he was fixing the car. He got us into this and that; he can get us out. I didn’t think this would go on for that much longer.

My sister…

“He’s still taking to his family about the ring,“ I said.

“Way to beat a dead horse, Shack. Do you even want that ring anymore?”

“No.”

“Did you tell him that?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say? And, Elsa, don’t start with your single word answers, again.”

“He said, I did want the ring, or that I would want the ring. I don’t want the ring now, because they have it. But he’s going to get it from them, because it’s his ring. When he gets it, he’s going to fix it for me. He’s going to give it to me, then it will be my ring, and it will be spectacular. He promises, it will be the best ring I’ve even seen in my life and I will want it.”

“Is this romantic? He’s fighting for your ring? Is it gallantry?”

“Yes. I think this is how he feels. It’s a matter of honor to him, I’d say. And honoring me too, I expect.”

“You don’t feel honored?”

“I don’t know. You asked if I wanted the ring. I said, no. It’s because of all the family strife. I don’t want to put that on, and yes, I did tell him. He said it was not a family strife ring, it was his ring and it belonged on my finger.”

“So you’re just going to wait and let them fight it out?”

“Yes. Can you think of a better idea? He has to decide to leave the ring on his own. Otherwise, I’m looking at; you didn’t want to wait for my ring!”

“Fuck, Elsa. Well, are you doing

“Fuck, Elsa. Well, are you doing all right? You sound okay.”

“Yeah, I’m fine. This is annoying but he feels he has do it. I can see his side of this. It’s not like he’s insane. His argument is solid. He’s in the right! If he wasn’t, I’d be all over him. But as it is, he’s fighting for his rights and for a beautiful ring for me. What am I supposed to do? Tell him not to stand up for himself… not to stand up for me? That’s some shit advice, right there.”

“When you put it that way, I agree. Okay. So he’s going to battle, mommy and sissy for your ring. Got it.” She takes a hit of her cigarette.

“Mommy, sissy and the brother-in-law.”

“What? Now he’s involved? What the fuck is he doing? This rich guy, who can buy anything he wants, for himself or his wife, wants your ring? He wants Shack’s heirloom ring, promised to him for twenty years? For what? So he can turn around and give it to his wife, so she can put it in her closet? And fuck the whole family in the process? Elsa, I have changed my tune. He should fight those motherfuckers till he beats ‘em!”

I laughed. I hear her smoke.

“Okay, you did not even say a single syllable. What is wrong?”

“I don’t like the fighting. It puts him in a bad mood. Also, it’s clear she does not want to give him the ring, because she does want him to marry me. I think we should be looking at that and talking about that.”

“When did you come to this? How do you know?”

“Well, I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure this is the case. Look, she was supposed to give me or him or us the ring, when we visited. She took it down and showed us, but she couldn’t bring herself to hand it over. That stuff she said to me was bullshit code for her son. If she was okay with him marrying me, she’d have given him the ring. It would be at the jeweler right now. There would be no phone calls, no, Shack in a foul mood, and no fights in the family.”

“I see, and I have no clue why I didn’t see it myself. Damn it! I hate when you’re ahead of me. But since you are, how have you decided to deal with this?”

“Let it play out. Let him fight until he wins or loses. If I suggest otherwise, he will get indignant. He’s a Sadge, fighting for his beliefs. Do you really think I should interfere?”

“No, you shouldn’t. You’re right about this and here I am again, caught dumb.”

“You have the same transit as I do. It’s your turn.”

“I don’t like the brother-in-law getting involved. Bad juju for him, for doing that.”

“I agree, so does, Shack, so does his brother, but so what? Band’s playing at this point.”

“You call this a band? I call these people, pieces of shit.”

I snorted. “I see your point, but they’re going to be my in-laws, so I’m trying to stay out of it. Think if this was our family, fighting. Some fiancé person wants to get involved and…”

“They’d get machine-gunned! Okay, I get it. You do sound good for all you’re going through. He’s got you well fortified.”

“He does.”

“Well not many can do that for you, and his brother is me, so I do think he is the right man for you. This is the right family, you’ve just got to stay away from them. Get married. Stay in the West and avoid that wicked witch of the East, who won’t give you your ring.”

I laughed. “Do you really think she is wicked?”

“I think she doesn’t want her son to be happy. Correction!  She does not want either of her sons to be happy. Is that evil? I’ll leave it to Libra, to decide.”

Click.

Shack came home, red in the face. He was incensed.

“What happened?”

“My dad called me today,” he said. He looked like he could have a minor stroke. “My fucking father is in on this now! Do you know what that means? It means there is another fucking person in the loop, calling me and then calling me again, because he can’t call my brother, because my brother won’t talk to him.”

“But I call my brother, to talk about what my father says. My brother hates my father and does not want to hear anything about him. I say, okay, and then my mother calls me, and then she calls my brother… you know the rest.”

“How is your father involved in this? I thought it was your mother’s ring.”

“It’s MY ring! But yes. It’s from her side of the family. My father got involved, because my bitch sister, I mean, my sister, who I love, even though she’s a BITCH, called him.”

“I didn’t know the status of their relationship,” I said.

“Thick as thieves and they’re both thieves!” he said. “Next thing I know, he’ll be saying the ring should be his! That, motherfucker. You have no idea the trouble he’s caused.”

“Elsa, I can’t stand this anymore and you should not be put through this any longer. I am sorry! I am sorry, I come from a family with so many assholes in it. I am going to resolve this, tomorrow.”

“Good!”

“I have heard from everyone, over and over. I want to sleep on this, and maybe, maybe talk to one or two of them tomorrow. After that, I will make my decision. It will be my decision, what I do about this. I will tell you what that decision is, when I get home tomorrow night. Then you can I figure out what we want to do, to move forward.”

“Sounds good.”

“This is one of the many things I love about you. We can actually get something done. As soon as I met you, my car got fixed… but look at this house. It’s beautiful! This is my favorite house, I’ve ever lived in and buying it was painless. Painless! We did this together and we didn’t have a single issue. I’m not used to that, Elsa, as you can see. Does this sound all right to you? Are you okay, with what I’m doing?”

“I am, and I’d glad this will be settled, tomorrow. You’re looking a little rough.”

He snorted, and laughed his ass off. He started to say something but had to stop and laugh some more. I guess he wasn’t used to me complaining about his appearance.

king and I

“Okay. Well I don’t want to look rough for you. I want to look great for you, like you look great for me. So please, Elsa, music. I need music, again tonight. Is it okay? Will you sit will me? Or lay like a cat, if you prefer. I like when you do that.”

“I’m going to play our family songs again, if that’s okay. I thought of a few more that might belong. I want to try them and see if the fit like I think they might. I also want to get my mind of this. Will you?”

“Yes, I want to hear the new songs.”

“Okay, great!” he said, totally perked up.

I lie down on the couch, feeling content and satisfied, knowing we’d step into a new scene in twenty-four hours. My sister and I were weary of this one. We called it, “The Ring and I”, instead of, The King and I”. He was in one movie, I was in the other. We agreed, my script was better.

Music, blasting, Shack calmed right down and dosed me his valium-ness. He still had it and he had it in spades. I had him, and no complaints.

To be continued.
