Alright, Star Wars fans, I gotta ask—what’s the one thing Ewan McGregor absolutely nails as Obi-Wan Kenobi? Could it be that legendary Alec Guinness vibe he brings, or maybe just the way he can wield a lightsaber and our hearts at the same time? Either way, after his return in the 2022 Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+, fans have been craving more like a Sarlacc pit waiting for its next snack. But here’s the kicker: up until now, there’s been zero confirmation of a second season—zilch, nada, crickets… You get it.
They even had the audacity to release the Blu-ray/4K set with the label “The Complete Series,” pretty much throwing subtle shade at our hopes for future episodes. But hold your tauntauns—McGregor’s optimism is strong with the Force. In a recent Variety interview, he made it crystal clear—he wants back in! Like, who can blame him? He loves diving deeper into Alec Guinness’ shoes almost as much as we love watching him do it!
“I really do hope we get a chance to do another one,” McGregor said… Cue Jedi hand wave. “There’s a few more stories to squeeze between where we left off and when Alec Guinness shows up with Luke Skywalker.” Now, if you’re like me, you’re probably thinking, “Well, duh!” There’s so much emotional baggage between Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader and Obi-Wan that we still haven’t fully unpacked. And yet, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy’s been playing it coy, hinting that maybe, just maybe, Kenobi could pop up elsewhere—even teasing a possible movie appearance.
So, what do you think? Should we ride the hyperdrive back to Tatooine for Season 2, or has the galaxy moved on to new projects? Whatever happens, one thing’s for sure: McGregor’s ready to embrace that Jedi cloak again, and honestly, I’m here for it.
Lightsabers crossed for more adventures with the one and only Obi-Wan…
Ewan McGregor finally returned as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a series released on Disney+ in 2022. While it was a success, there was no word on a potential second season. When the show was released on Blu-ray/4K, it was billed as ‘The Complete Series’ rather than ‘The Complete First Season,’ which seemed to indicate that Lucasfilm wasn’t going to bring the show back. However, McGregor told Variety that he hopes he gets the chance to do another season.
“I loved, more than anything, getting to know Alec Guinnessâ work because I was playing him as a young man. Even now with the series, thatâs my personal challenge â if a take feels a bit like him, Iâm happy,” McGregor said. “I really do hope we get a chance to do another one. Between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think thereâs another few stories to tell in there.“
While the show had its critics, I found plenty to enjoy. Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi is always delightful, and seeing him sharing the screen with Hayden Christensen once again was a highlight. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said last year that while a second season wasn’t in the works, it’s always possible that Kenobi could return in another project, perhaps even in a movie. “I always hesitate to say no to more Obi-Wan Kenobi. Maybe we end up doing something that gets incorporated into some of the other stories that weâre doing, or eventually into a movie, but who knows?” Kennedy said. “But right now, itâs still our standard stand-alone limited series, we have no plans for expansion right now.“
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series took place ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and followed the former Jedi master as he set off on a mission to rescue a young Leia Organa. Along the way, he confronts his former apprentice and accepts that Anakin Skywalker has been consumed by Darth Vader. The project had originally been pitched as a trilogy of movies by Stuart Beattie, who conceived a story which would have explored Kenobiâs transition from the character we saw at the end of Revenge of the Sith to the one we first met in A New Hope. The underperformance of Solo: A Star Wars Story caused Disney to reconsider, and Obi-Wan Kenobiâs story made the leap to the small screen.
Would you like to see Ewan McGregor return for Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2? Or should the franchise over on to new projects?
