Ever wondered what it would be like to literally lose your locks just to catch a movie? Well, Yorgos Lanthimos’s audacious new film, Bugonia, is turning that fantasy – or nightmare, depending on your attachment to your hair – into reality. This Monday in Los Angeles, a special screening demands one thing of its audience: be bald, or be willing to go under the clippers on site! Yes, you read that right. Inspired by Emma Stone’s bald-headed role in the film, attendees will match her striking look in a film where heads must roll, literally. It’s the kind of bold experiment only Lanthimos can pull off, blending art, commitment, and a touch of cosmic mischief – perhaps a nod to Mercury’s current charge forcing us all to shed old skins to see the world anew. The event unfolds at the Culver Theater, with a barber ready to transform the brave and curious at 6 p.m., ahead of the 8 p.m. screening. This is not just a movie night; it’s a cinematic statement on identity, transformation, and maybe, on the power of a fresh scalp under the stars. Have hair? No entry.
For Yorgos Lanthimos‘ upcoming film Bugonia, a special screening is being held in Los Angeles on Monday, where attendees must be either bald or shave their heads to watch it. The moviegoers who participate will match Emma Stone‘s bald-headed character in the film.
DoLA’s Instagram posted the requirements, with a caption that reads in part, “Have hair? A barber will be on-site starting at 6 p.m. to shave it all off. Screening starts at 8 p.m. This is real. And yes, part of it will be filmed.”
The screening will take place at the Culver Theater, and participants have to RSVP as the tickets are first-come, first-served and are 18+ only.
Bugonia marks the fourth time the Oscar winner has teamed up with Lanthimos, after previously working on The Favourite (2018), Poor Things (2023) and Kinds of Kindness (2024). It sees Stone play a powerful CEO who is kidnapped and accused of being an alien. Additional castmembers include Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone.
Earlier this year, Stone opened up about shaving her head in real life for the project. She told Vogue that while the experience was like “No better feeling in the world,” it was also personal to the actress. Before the haircut took place, Stone recalls she “burst into tears in her trailer” because she was thinking about her mother, Krista Stone, who previously shaved her head from breast cancer treatment.
Focus Features‘ Bugonia will release in U.S. theaters on Oct. 24.
