Elvis Presley is still known as the King of Rock and Roll but as much as he’s famous for his iconic hits, his death has equally become the subject of intense publicity.

On 16 August 1977, aged just 42, the ‘Hound Dog’ singer was found face down on the bathroom floor of his home in Memphis, Tennessee, with his pyjama bottoms down by his ankles.

Ill health and death rumours swirl

Presley had gained an extortionate amount of weight in the final years of his life, bringing on a number of health issues.

Using a number of prescription drugs, paranoid and overweight, he had become unrecognisable from his younger self, though he continued to relentlessly tour in his final years.

Fans would still flock to arenas to see the music icon perform, though it was clear he was not the same in the 70s as he was in the 50s.

Despite his deteriorating health and pale exterior, his sudden death left fans stunned.

Presley’s family saw the speculation that followed his death, and put an order in to seal the singer’s autopsy report for 50 years.

This ultimately means nobody will know about the cause of Presley’s death for sure until 16 August 2027.

One member outside the family attended the autopsy – Dan Warlick, the Chief Investigator for the Tennessee Office of the State Chief Medical Examiner.

But despite the family’s best attempts to keep the results private, theories around his death continue to swirl, as experts have weighed in with what they think happened.

Experts give their verdicts on Elvis’ death

Warlick for one, fuelled the theory that the star died while straining on the toilet.

He once explained: “Presley’s chronic constipation – the result of years of prescription drug abuse and high-fat, high-cholesterol gorging – brought on what’s known as Valsalva’s maneuver.

“Put simply, the strain of attempting to defecate compressed the singer’s abdominal aorta, shutting down his heart.”

Others even brought up suggestions of a drug overdose, though coroners in the past have disagreed with this idea.

It looks like everyone will have to hold on for a little bit longer before we all know for sure.
