David Letterman Applauds Jimmy Kimmel’s Defiance Of Donald Trump

Letterman’s Wednesday appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” began with him playfully asking the host if viewers understood he was “the leader of the resistance.” In response, Kimmel quipped, “I am the totally ineffective leader of the resistance.”

Letterman continued, mocking the president’s attention on Kimmel. He teased that he wasn’t sure the broadcast would be aired, saying, “You can never keep track with you getting yanked off.”

The veteran added that he was going to align himself with Kimmel’s outspoken stance against Trump. “I’m going to suck up to you because I feel like if I kind of tag along with you, I’ll be glorified in retrospect,” Letterman declared before seemingly addressing Trump.

“And this is irrespective of party or political ideology,” Letterman said. “If the leader of the free world is a fool, the leader of the free world then should expect and examine every bit of ridicule he receives.”

This is not the first time Letterman has called out Trump’s repeated heat on late-night stars. As The Blast reported weeks ago, Trump pushed for Meyers’ dismissal with Brendan Carr backing him, and Letterman did not hold back in condemning the move.

“The president of the United States now wants to fire Seth Meyers, and I thought, this is just delightful. How do you think that’s going to go?” Letterman said in an episode of “The Barbara Gaines Show.”

He went ahead to ridicule Trump’s administration, calling it “just a wonder of idiocy.” He added, “It’s fantastic. It knows no bounds. It’s never-ending. He’s our current dictator — and he’s not going anywhere.”

When Kimmel was suspended back in September, Letterman stepped in, defending him. Per The Blast, Letterman called the cancellation a “misery” and cautioned that it reflected the behavior of an “authoritarian” system.

He argued that silencing a comedian to satisfy political outrage sets a bad precedent. Letterman added that in his own decades on air, he openly criticized six U.S. presidents without ever facing removal.

Meanwhile, Trump celebrated the cancellation, praising ABC for “having the courage to do what needed to be done.”

Days before Letterman slammed Trump on Kimmel’s show, The Blast reported that the 79-year-old Republican had once again ridiculed Kimmel’s talents as he prepared to host the Kennedy Center Honors.

While the commander-in-chief bragged about being the first president to carry out hosting duties for the event, he aimed at other TV presenters, singling Kimmel out.

“Jimmy Kimmel was horrible, and some of these people. If I can’t beat out Jimmy Kimmel in terms of talent, then I don’t think I should be president,” Trump said, adding that the broadcast would break rating records.

Trump’s remarks echoed how he had previously attacked Kimmel’s skills after he returned on air, describing him as someone “who is not funny and has done poorly” on air.

Despite Trump’s open criticism, Kimmel has welcomed the idea of having him on his show.

As The Blast reported, during an October appearance on “Bloomberg Screentime,” Kimmel joked about inviting the president but opposed the thought of FCC chairman Carr coming.

“I’d love to have Trump on the show, for sure… I feel like he knows that. Alright, yeah, I’ll ask him,” Kimmel joked, prompting laughter and applause from the audience.

However, the White House was not amused at the idea.  Spokesperson Abigail Jackson dismissed it saying, “Reacting to anything Jimmy Kimmel says would require me to watch his show, and I have much more entertaining things to do, like watch paint dry.”
