Ever found yourself perplexed by the dynamics of age-gap relationships? Like, how is it that a 29-year-old is considered just “young at heart” when he’s dating a 57-year-old CEO, yet if the roles were reversed, we’d all raise an eyebrow? Welcome to the discussion surrounding Babygirl, the film that’s creating a buzz this holiday season – and for good reason! Directed by Halina Reijn, it features the incomparable Nicole Kidman as a woman entangled in an affair with a much younger man, played by Harris Dickinson. In a recent tête-à-tête with W Magazine, Reijn passionately defended the age difference and challenged societal norms. She quipped that it’s utterly ridiculous how we normalizeobviousness when it comes to age gaps favoring younger men and older women. So, what’s her take on why we need to rethink our perceptions? Buckle up, folks! The conversation about age and love is getting a refresh, and it’s an eye-opener. Curious? You can dive deeper into this thought-provoking dialogue right *here*.

Babygirl Director Explains Age Gap Relationship

Babygirl just hit theaters this week, and it’s already one of the holiday season’s most-discussed films. It may even make an appearance or two when Oscar nominations get announced on January 17.

The film’s premise — no spoilers, promise — is that Nicole Kidman‘s character Romy Mathis, a 57-year-old CEO, has an affair with a 28-year-old intern played by Harris Dickinson.

Now, if there’s one thing the internet loves to discuss, it’s age gap relationships like the one in the film — and in a recent interview with W Magazine, Babygirl director Halina Reijn got real about why the age gap relationship depicted in the film really isn’t a big deal.

“If we see a movie where the male actor is the same age as the female actor, we find that odd. Which is insane,” she said. “It should completely be normalized that the age gaps switch and that women have different relationships.”

“We’re not trapped in a box anymore. We internalize the male gaze, we internalize patriarchy, and we need to free ourselves from it. It’s really hard.”
