Hours before Tyler Robinson’s arrest, he made an unusual request to authorities about how he wanted to be taken in, with a sheriff revealing that he was worried about being shot and police raiding his home.

The 22-year-old told a family friend that he wanted a “peaceful, gentle surrender,” a message that was relayed to Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby, whose deputies later carried out the arrest.

“I could tell his voice was kind of shaky, so my first thought is, ‘Who died?'” the official said about the call in a press conference. “‘Like, who’s he gonna tell me that died?’ And then I couldn’t fathom what actually came out of his mouth.”

“So he said, ‘Hey, I know who Charlie Kirk’s shooter is. I know the family through religious association, and he’s in Washington County now. And we’re working to get him to come in voluntarily,'” Brooksby further remarked, per the New York Post.

During the press conference, Brooksby also shared details about Robinson’s demeanor during the arrest.

The 22-year-old was reportedly afraid of being shot by police, which may have contributed to his “quiet and somber” behavior as he was taken into custody.

It was also revealed that Robinson had experienced suicidal thoughts, but his parents were able to dissuade him.

“During that phone call, some information was provided about Tyler potentially having some suicidal ideation [and] was en route to a remote part of Washington County,’ the Sheriff shared. “The parents convinced him not to do that and conveyed that they would stand by him and help him surrender peacefully.”

Meanwhile, Brooksby emphasized that Robinson understood it was only a matter of time before he would be caught.

The county sheriff noted that the intense investigation into Kirk’s shooting and the public awareness of the incident made the alleged killer understand that he would inevitably be found out.

“Tyler knew it was just inevitable with all the law enforcement pressure that he, his picture in the news, the gun, the gun on the news,” he said.

Brooksby added, “He knew it was inevitable that he would be caught.”

After his arrest last week, Robinson was taken to the Utah County Jail, where he is being held without bail and from where he appeared virtually for his arraignment on Tuesday.

He now faces seven charges: aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, two counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.

For now, it remains unclear how Robinson will plead, as he did not enter a plea during Tuesday’s hearing. No plea will be entered unless a judge determines at a preliminary hearing that there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed.

The next court date is set for September 29 and, like the previous hearing, will also be held virtually. Robinson does not currently have an attorney, but he is expected to have one appointed by the time of the hearing.

For now, the charges brought against Robinson are state-level, filed by authorities in Utah, where Kirk was murdered.

However, the possibility that federal charges may be added remains, as confirmed by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.

“There’s not that many murder charges that are federal,” he told Fox News on Monday. “There’s stalking, there is certain deprivation of rights charges that we possibly could bring. But that goes after going through all the evidence and trying to understand what was this man’s motivation was in doing what he did. And if there’s a federal charge we will bring it — no doubt about it.”

Blanche went on to assure the public that federal officials intend to support Utah authorities, even if no federal charges are ultimately filed against Robinson.

“If there’s not a federal charge, we’re gonna do everything we can to support Utah and make sure that they get everything they need from us,” Blanche further remarked.
