Pop culture fans know Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers as the duo behind the podcast Las Culturistas, where they interview celebs and break down everything from what’s going on in entertainment to politics with zero filter. But in their latest episode, they stirred up a whole different kind of conversation.
During a recent podcast, their “I Don’t Think So, Honey” segment shifted into a broader conversation about politics and looking back on past choices. Yang said he now regrets how strongly he supported Hillary Clinton in 2016. Rogers, on the other hand, said he doesn’t regret it, explaining that at the time they were focused on trying to defeat Donald Trump, a goal he felt was made harder by what he described as “misogynistic” behavior from some Bernie Sanders supporters.
Rogers then said that he doesn’t think Gavin Newsom will be the 2028 Democratic Party presidential nominee, saying, “Any time a politician is making it too obviously about themselves, I’m already done.” He immediately followed by saying, “And don’t waste your money sending to Jasmine Crockett. Do not do it. Don’t do it, you’re going to waste your money.” Which Yang backed him up on.
He went on to say that he has nothing against Crockett personally. His point, he explained, was that Democrats going forward may need candidates who feel less “defined” in voters’ minds if they want to win in places like Texas or on a national level. Rogers then pointed to James Talarico, who is also running for the same Senate seat, describing him as “a rising Democratic politician from some place like Texas who is, yes, speaking a little bit to the middle, but at least he’s someone we can’t define already.” He then added that he thinks Newsom and Crockett are already too defined.
