Eilish’s uncle, former U.S. congressman Brian Baird, lashed out at the Daily Mail for suggesting the singer could be seen as hypocritical if she doesn’t give up her Los Angeles mansion after her powerful speech at the Grammy Awards.

“Oh, please, give me a break! This is disingenuous,” Baird said when asked about the incident, emphasizing the family’s long-standing support for immigrant communities.

The former Democratic representative for Washington’s Third Congressional District, who also enjoyed a distinguished career as a psychologist, criticized ICE’s practices while praising his niece.

“I think Billie is fantastic… of course, we’re standing behind her. ICE agents are killing people on the street,” the politician noted.

Regarding his niece’s comments about “no one” being illegal, Baird, who is the singer’s mother, Maggie’s brother, explained, “Technically, everyone is an immigrant in this country.”

Then, when asked if the backlash had affected Eilish, Baird declined to comment directly but confirmed the family remains close-knit. “Of course, I have spoken to her. Our whole family is very close,” he said.

The Singer Faced Criticism Over Her ‘Stolen Land’ Remark

The controversy began on Sunday, when Eilis took to the stage alongside her brother, Finneas O’Connell, to accept the Song of the Year award at the Grammys for her song, “Wildflower.”

The singer, who had already begun to vocally oppose ICE’s actions, especially in Minnesota, via social media posts, didn’t waste the opportunity to call out the agency on music’s biggest night.

She said, “As grateful as I feel, I honestly don’t feel like I need to say anything, but that no one is illegal on stolen land.”

“It’s just really hard to know what to say and what to do right now,” Eilish continued. “And I just I feel really hopeful in this room, and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting, and our voices really do matter, and the people matter.”

She then concluded by stating, “F-CK ICE.”

While the star-studded crowd at Crypto.com Arena applauded, social media quickly turned attention to Eilish’s $3 million Glendale mansion, which sits on land historically tied to the Tongva tribe.

Critics called out what they saw as hypocrisy, suggesting the 24-year-old singer either return the property or use it to support migrants she publicly champions.

A spokesperson for the Tongva tribe has since confirmed that Eilish’s Glendale home  sits on their “ancestral land.”

While the singer has not personally contacted the tribe, they expressed appreciation for her public statements at the Grammy Awards.

The tribe, however, stressed that public figures should explicitly name the specific tribes connected to the land to avoid vague acknowledgments.

“It is our hope that in future discussions, the tribe can explicitly be referenced to ensure the public understands that the greater Los Angeles Basin remains Gabrieleno Tongva territory,” a spokesperson told the Daily Mail.

Legal Experts Say Acknowledging ‘Stolen Land’ Could Give Tongva Tribe Grounds to Challenge The Singer’s LA Home

Meanwhile, legal experts have pointed out that Eilish’s acknowledgment of “stolen land” could open the door for potential action by the tribe.

Sinai Law Firm, a Los Angeles-based eviction firm, offered pro-bono assistance to the tribe and prepared a 30-day notice to reclaim the property.

However, officials emphasized that the Tongva have not indicated any desire to remove Eilish, and any legal proceedings would likely take years.

In a separate incident, GB News reporter Ben Leo visited Eilish’s $3 million Los Angeles mansion days after her Grammy remarks to request entry. Video footage shows the reporter standing outside a large, locked fence surrounding the property.

“Billie, let us in, please, Billie. We are here because this is stolen land,” Leo said. “And we think we should be given access to your quite lovely $3 million mansion. Hopefully, if she sticks by her merits, she’ll have no problem with me waltzing in, maybe making a cup of coffee or tea.”

Despite his requests, he received no response at the gate. “According to the driveway, Billie does believe in borders,” he added, pointing to the high-security fence and cameras surrounding the property.

The controversy comes amid Eilish’s broader philanthropic and activist work. Last year, she donated $11.5 million from her “Hit Me Hard and Soft” tour to environmental and anti-hunger initiatives.

She was also recently honored at the 2026 MLK Jr. Beloved Community Awards in Atlanta with the Environmental Justice Award.

During her acceptance speech, the 24-year-old  expressed discomfort at being celebrated in the current social and political climate.

“To be honest, I really don’t feel deserving… it felt very strange to be celebrated for working toward environmental justice at a time where it feels less achievable than ever, given the state of our country and the world right now,” Eilish stated.

“The Therefore I Am” singer also referenced the death of Minnesota resident Renee Good at the hands of ICE earlier this year, condemning what she described as growing abuses of power against civilians and protesters.

The singer stressed, “We’re seeing our neighbors being kidnapped, peaceful protesters being assaulted and murdered, our civil rights being stripped.”

As of now, Eilish has yet to directly respond to the ongoing controversy caused by her 2026 Grammy Award speech.
