Bill Belichick isn’t staying silent after his former boss, Robert Kraft, recently claimed that hiring him was a “big risk.”

The legendary coach worked for Kraft as the coach of the New England Patriots, serving in the role from 2000 to 2023.

Bill Belichick has now pushed back on Kraft’s remarks, pointing out that taking the job wasn’t without risks for him either.

Weeks after Patriots owner Robert Kraft seemingly took a jab at Bill Belichick, the veteran coach has now responded.

Kraft had said in an interview that he took a “big risk” by giving up a first-round pick to steal Belichick away from the New York Jets in 2000.

Reacting to the remarks, Belichick told ESPN in an exclusive interview that he also took a “big risk” taking on the job at the time he joined.

He also revealed that he already had an opportunity to be the head coach of the Jets but turned it down as the team was going through a transition following the death of former owner Leon Hess.

“I already had an opportunity to be the Head Coach of the New York Jets, but the ownership situation was unstable,” the veteran coach told the outlet.

Reflecting further on his decision to join the Patriots, Belichick revealed that previous coaches of the team and other NFL acquaintances had tried to dissuade him from taking the job due to its “many internal obstacles.”

He, however, chose to stay, but first insisted to management that a lot of changes needed to be made.

“I had been warned by multiple previous Patriots’ coaches, as well as other members of other NFL organizations and the media, that the New England job was going to come with many internal obstacles,” Belichick recalled.

He added, “I made it clear that we would have to change the way the team was managed to regain the previously attained success.”

Ultimately, Belichick’s decision to stay with the Patriots turned out to be the right one for his career, as he led them to 17 AFC East titles and a record six Super Bowl championships.

Earlier this year, Belichick left his trophy-filled career with the Patriots for college football with the Tar Heels.

However, what should have been a step away from the intensity of the NFL quickly became drama-filled after the coach’s bizarre interview on CBS News’ Sunday Morning in April.

At the time, Belichick appeared on the show to promote his book, The Art of Winning: Lessons from a Life in Football.

However, when the conversation shifted to his relationship with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordan Hudson,  who was also in the studio,  the bombshell blonde quickly shut it down in an awkward exchange that has since gone viral.

Since the incident, many have speculated about how much control Hudson has over Belichick’s affairs, with some even questioning whether she is involved in his role with the UNC football team.

On several occasions, Belichick has publicly stated that Hudson isn’t involved in making any decisions regarding his job as the coach of UNC.

However, that hasn’t stopped criticism from pouring in from football analysts, former players, and even UNC alumni.

Most recently, college football analyst Paul Finebaum joined the train, saying that Belichick is playing “second fiddle” to his 24-year-old girlfriend.

“Also, there’s Bill Belichick, anybody heard of this guy?” Finebaum said sarcastically on a recent episode of “First Take.”

He added, “He’s only the most-famous NFL coach of all time this side of Vince Lombardi, but lately he’s played second fiddle to his girlfriend. I can’t believe I’m actually saying that, but I am.”

Finebaum also noted that the entire situation has now placed even more focus on how Belichick will perform once the season begins.

“How does he do on the field?” Finebaum asked. “Mack Brown did not leave a great cupboard in Chapel Hill, and I think Belichick has recruited well. Can he navigate the nuances of college football? That is really the question.”

During a chat on ESPN Radio’s “Marty and McGee,” UNC football general manager Michael Lombardi addressed the reporting around Belichick and Hudson.

He claimed that a lot of the stories were “just noise” and emphasized that the team has remained focused on their goals through it all.

Lombardi also hinted at why he hasn’t really spoken out publicly against those spreading such stories online, despite how frequently the rumors have been circulated.

“For us to be distracted by something that has no bearing, that has no relevance whatsoever, that is a complete falsehood in terms of what people are saying or what they’re writing, it’s comical,” Belichick’s right-hand man said, per Pro Football Talk.

“And for me to really even attack anybody who’s saying it gives them credibility. Which I don’t, because it’s a completely false narrative,” Lombardi added.
