Something new

And now…for something completely different.

We’re all movie and TV fans here at JoBlo. So, this week, we’ll be trying something a little unorthodox and having a communal segment. Whether it be at the theaters or on your couches, we all connect with the entertainment of the past and present (while hoping for the best in the future). So, what are you currently watching? We’re opening it up to the readers. Are you on a rotation of a show you’ve seen a million times? Are you starting a new show? Did you recently check out a movie that you’ve been wanting to watch? Are you revisiting a classic from your personal collection or one of the many streaming libraries?

Let us know if you have a recommendation for us or for our readers to watch! We’d definitely like to know if there’s something that doesn’t get the spotlight often. Or even if there’s a popular movie that might’ve hit differently on your recent rewatch.

Fresh Off the Boat

Fresh Off the Boat

I’m currently on a rotation of ABC’s family sitcom Fresh Off the Boat. It’s tough to gauge this show’s reception cause I never really hear anyone talking about it. However, the ratings for this show were strong enough to carry on for six seasons. I had only vaguely been familiar with celebrity chef Eddie Huang before this show and just barely heard that they were doing a sitcom about his life right before I stumbled upon it (a rare “recent” channel surfing discovery I’ve experienced thus far). Truth be told, I may have been a specifically perfect audience member for it. I became hooked on the show because, despite whether it’s accurate to his life or not (Huang has disputed the show’s stories), it was like watching my own childhood as an Asian kid growing up in the 90s.

However, I think there’s something in this show for everyone. It’s definitely one of the more wholesome, cheesy, family-friendly titles I watch for escapism. It aired on Tuesdays on ABC, but it’s a show that’s perfect for their classic TGIF block. I believe they even attempted to revive TGIF with this show included. While I related hardcore to the stories and the nostalgia of the show’s 90s aesthetic, the series is elevated by the spunky writing of the showrunner and developer, Nahnatchka Khan. Khan’s career has consisted of writing for American Dad and showrunning Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, which had the late James Van Der Beek playing a hilariously exaggerated version of himself. Khan would even make a show similar to Fresh Off the Boat, except with a much bigger name, as she also headed up Young Rock for NBC.

Fresh Off the Boat does a fine job of keeping a foot in traditional coming-of-age family sitcoms, but it also indulges in some quick wit dialogue delivery with a bevy of 90s references thrown in. It’s like Tina Fey-lite. If family sitcoms are your thing, I very much recommend Fresh Off the Boat. You can currently check out the full series on Hulu.

The Rocky Series

Rocky

I know this is a series that is totally unnecessary to recommend, but with the first film’s 50th anniversary being this year, I decided to splurge and get the new Rocky 4K Ultimate Knockout Collection that had recently been released. First and foremost, the film looks glorious in its new transfer. The picture cleans up well and it felt like watching the movie for the first time again. Even though I’ve grown up on these movies, I still noticed new details in the first film that I’ve never seen before (also because the sequels tend to overshadow it). I don’t think it’s been that long since revisiting the 1976 original, but my goodness, I don’t think I’ve realized just how gritty the first film is. Rocky‘s low budget and just the grimy aesthetic of the 70s may play into that, but the main parts of Philadelphia shown in the first film are very raw, stripped-down and unglamorous. I also can’t believe I never truly caught the foreshadowing of Rocky doing his famous training on the raw meat and how he’d break the ribs, and now seeing how his body punches really punished Apollo during their fateful match.

So far, I’ve only worked my way through Rocky and Rocky II in the new 4K collection. Like I said, it’s a splurge, but if you can afford it or get a good deal, I think it’s totally worth it if you’re a fan of these movies. I can’t wait to not only see the presentation quality of the rest of the films, but also get a chance to revisit the Rocky IV: Ultimate Director’s Cut, which is also included in the set. While I think Stallone cutting out the robot is understandable, I do think there’s a lot missing from the movie with the new cut, but even as a die-hard Rocky IV fan, I think he really improves on a lot of the scenes as well. The funeral scene is more emotional for one thing. But I think he did the impossible and improved on the boxing matches as well. The new pacing and the atmosphere feel incredible.

I am also curious to check out the director’s cut of Rocky Balboa that’s on this set as I have not heard much about it.

While these titles may not be revolutionary on everyone’s radar, they are what I’m currently watching that I think everyone should check out and re-check out if you’re interested. But now it’s your turn! What are YOU currently watching? Drop your recommendations in the comments below! Have a great weekend!
