That really translated into the screen, I felt like I was part of the story, ike a fly on the wall watching it. So, you immersed yourself in that world of celeb, pop culture, and music. Was there anything in particular, any characters, people, or films that you watched beforehand to draw inspiration from?

There was an energy that I found that a lot of musicians, when the camera turned on or when they were with their friends behind the scenes, but that I found they all shared. There was this kind of leader of the pack, like a constant high adrenaline thing that I was so interested in because a lot of actors are introverts and are a lot quieter and kind of fold into themselves. Not everyone, but a lot of actors.

I mean, it was the total opposite. There was a showmanship that came with being a musician, even when they were at home. I was watching a lot of Brockhampton and thinking about people like… Not saying all of these things apply to those people, but Dominic Fike, Omar Apollo, Rex, or Steve Lacey, Odd Future, Frank – all of these people we were thinking about on the playlists. And a couple of those artists have a lot of footage of them at home. Brockhampton obviously has lots of documentaries and stuff. And I just found that relationship to the people that they worked with interesting.

And I also went to a performing arts school, so I grew up around a lot of musicians and people in that world. And it’s just something I’d observed as well, and that was something that I found so interesting. The energy of having to keep that up was tiring to me, just to observe.

I can imagine, yeah. It’s really like putting on that persona.

Totally.

And then the dynamic between Matthew and Oliver is so intense, so believable. What was your relationship like with Théodore Pellerin offscreen? How did you guys build that chemistry?

We hung out a little bit before, but we kind of just had it immediately. We just got on pretty quickly. I immediately felt safe with him. I knew that I could try things or offer things and not feel shut down. I also just believed in him as an actor; I immediately knew that he was brilliant. And so sometimes you’re only as good as your scene partner, and I just knew that some interesting stuff could happen between us in the scenes. We’d sometimes have dinner at my house and watch Couples Therapy. And just literally hang out and then go to work the next day.

I didn’t carry the anxiety offscreen, but  I think Théo feels differently – it’s a little bit different for me because my character was a bit more the ringleader. I think Théo felt a lot of that energy, the humiliation coming towards him every day. I think he then ended up embodying that a tiny bit.
