A person has been detained for questioning related to the abduction of Savannah Guthrie‘s mother, Nancy Guthrie, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Tuesday night in a statement on X.
“Earlier today, Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies detained a subject during a traffic stop south of Tucson. The subject is currently being questioned in connection to the Nancy Guthrie investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available,” the statement read.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI’s Evidence Response Team also said they were conducting a court-authorized search Tuesday night at a location in Rio Rico, Arizona, that’s related to the Guthrie investigation.
No updates on Nancy’s whereabouts were reported.
The advancement comes after the FBI released a series of surveillance photos and two videos of a potential suspect. In the footage, obtained by Nancy’s doorbell and security cameras, a person can be seen wearing a jacket, ski mask and gloves, with a backpack on and a firearm at the waist.
The 84-year-old was reported missing on Sunday, Feb. 1, after she did not show up for church. Local authorities and the FBI have treated Nancy’s disappearance from her Tucson, Arizona, home as a possible kidnapping or abduction.
The Today show host shared multiple video messages online alongside her brother, Camron Guthrie, and sister, Annie Guthrie, pleading for the safe return of her mother. On Feb. 4, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department acknowledged the reporting of a ransom note, that was originally obtained by TMZ and at least two local news outlets in Arizona, saying that investigators are “following all leads.”
One day later, Savannah acknowledged her mother’s suspected kidnapper, confirming that they “have heard the reports about a ransom letter in the media” and were “ready to talk” to the alleged abductor.
On Feb. 7, the television host and her siblings shared another video where she acknowledged they’d received a message from the alleged kidnapper, and were willing to pay to bring Nancy home.
“We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her,” she said. “This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
