You ever notice how the stars seem to align just right when you least expect it? Take Katey Sagal, for instance—she’s been orbiting our TV screens since forever, famously playing Peggy Bundy, the ultimate sitcom mom who redefined ‘complicated love and marriage.’ Now, as if conjured by some cosmic force, she’s back in the mix, not just reminiscing with her old ‘Married with Children’ crew over charity (props for supporting Christina Applegate’s fight against MS!) but stepping into a shiny new NBC sitcom alongside Jane Lynch. Titled Newlyweds, the show’s penned by some heavy hitters from Old Christine and black-ish, inspired by real-life therapists and best friends. It’s like the universe is whispering, “Opposites attract—and sometimes make the best TV.” So what does Sagal’s celestial comeback mean for our binge-watching destinies? Well, let’s just say the stars might be betting on a hilarious ride ahead. LEARN MORE
Katey Sagal is in the television mom hall-of-fame after her run as the ditzy, sex-starved, unsatisfied housewife Peggy Bundy on the popular Fox sitcom, Married with Children. Recently, Sagal and her co-stars of the raunchy show reunited for An Evening with The Bundys: The Married with Children Cast Reunion. The event was held for charity to help those like cast member, Christina Applegate, who is battling multiple sclerosis. Proceeds went to the Multiple Sclerosis Organization, Race to Erase MS — an organization dedicated to the treatment and cure of the illness.
Sagal has had quite a career in television. After Married with Children, she would go on to work on other popular shows like Futurama, 8 Simple Rules and Sons of Anarchy. Now, Deadline reports that Sagal will be starring in a new NBC multi-cam sitcom with Jane Lynch as her co-star. The New Adventures of Old Christine creator Kari Lizer and black-ish executive producer Gail Lerner are heading up the show, which is titled Newlyweds. Newlyweds was originally set up at Netflix with Curtis as the lead, but the Halloween star will hand the role off to Sagal and stay on as an executive producer as NBC picks up the project for pilot season.
Per Deadline, the show’s concept reads,
“Loosely inspired by real-life best friends and therapists Pepper Schwartz and Janet Lever, the Lizer, Lynch and Sagal sitcom centers on Ginger (Sagal) and Jill (Lynch) who have always been a team as opposites that work best together. As they sort their past and look toward their future, they’ll discover that in spite of it all, they wouldn’t change a thing.”
Curtis may still make an appearance as a recurring character on the show, but for now, she executive produces alongside Lerner, Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum, Scott Schwartz and Lionsgate Television. Meanwhile, Lizer, Lynch and Sagal will also executive produce with former Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff, Andrew Stearn and Alexandre Schmitt of Trip the Light Productions. Schwartz and Lever serve as consulting producers. The show was originally developed at Skydance Television, but will now be set up at Paramount TV after the studio’s big merger.
