Wait, What? Paul Mescal Channels Paul McCartney While Barry Keoghan’s Ringo Look Has Fans Questioning Reality—Beatles Reboot or Cosmic Conspiracy?

Ever wonder what it’d be like if the cosmic forces finally aligned to give us not one, but four whole films about The Beatles? Well, Sam Mendes has cracked the code. The director, known for his knack for epic storytelling, is diving headfirst into The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event, capturing the sprawling saga of the band like never before. With Harris Dickinson taking on John Lennon, Paul Mescal channeling Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan stepping into Ringo Starr’s shoes, the cast alone has me buzzing. All this comes after years of Mendes wrestling with the enormity of the Beatles’ story — because, let’s be honest, squeezing that legend into a single movie? Impossible. It’s like trying to bottle Mercury retrograde’s chaos in a jar — messy but fascinating. The project is backed by the band’s families and Apple Corps Ltd., so it’s the real deal, with scripts by some of today’s top writers, and supporting roles filled by a stellar ensemble including Saoirse Ronan and James Norton. Mark your cosmic calendars for April 7, 2028, when all four films drop simultaneously, ready to rewrite how a generation experiences The Beatles. Curious for more? LEARN MORE

Sam Mendes is hard at work on The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event, which stars Harris Dickinson (Babygirl) as John Lennon, Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) as Ringo Starr. The first looks at The Beatles have been revealed in postcards distributed at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, which was co-founded by Paul McCartney.

What We Know About The Beatles

This is the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and the members of the Beatles—Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison—have granted the full life story and music rights for a scripted movie. Mendes will direct all four movies, each focusing on a separate band member. Jez Butterworth (Ford v Ferrari), Peter Straughan (Conclave), and Jack Thorne (Adolescence) are writing the scripts.

Mendes officially unveiled the cast at CinemaCon last year. He explained that he’d been “trying to do a [Beatles] film for years” but ultimately gave up because “the story was too big for one film.” He didn’t think a TV series would work either. “There had to be a way to tell the epic story for a new generation,” Mendes said. “I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore and I think we found a way to do that.

The films also star Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) as Linda McCartney, James Norton (Happy Valley) as Brian Epstein, Mia McKenna-Bruce (How to Have Sex) as Maureen Starkey, Anna Sawai (Shōgun) as Yoko Ono, Aimee Lou Wood (The White Lotus) as Pattie Boyd, Harry Lloyd (Game of Thrones) as George Martin, David Morrissey (The Walking Dead) as Jim McCartney, Leanne Best (Carnival Row) as Mimi Smith, Bobby Schofield (Knightfall) as Neil Aspinall, Daniel Hoffmann-Gill (The Sandman) as Mal Evans, Arthur Darvill (Doctor Who) as Derek Taylor, and Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog) as Allen Klein.

All four films will be released at once on April 7, 2028.
