Ever wonder what it’s like to get a Hollywood invite and a weight-loss ultimatum before you even hit 16? Well, Alicia Silverstone just threw us this gem—a letter she penned at 15, right when her teen icon status was about to explode like a supernova under Leo’s spotlight. The ’90s queen spilled candid thoughts about landing a nearly-confirmed movie role and the frankly absurd demand to shed 5-10 pounds—because apparently, survival and thriving as a young actress are mutually exclusive. Between dodging body shamers who called her “Fatgirl” and emancipating herself off her parents’ clock to work those crazy hours, Silverstone’s journey is a cosmic collision of stardom, struggle, and sass. And as the stars might wager, sometimes your biggest role is just figuring out how to clap back at the universe. Curious how this tale aligns with Silverstone’s rise from “The Wonder Years” to “Clueless,” and her fiery stand against Hollywood’s harsh gaze? Dive in to see how the actress turned pressure into power—and discovered her own kind of stardom along the way. LEARN MORE
Actress and activist Alicia Silverstone is sharing an old letter she wrote a friend when she was 15 years old, right before she made it big as an actress in Hollywood.
Silverstone became a teen icon in the ’90s, appearing in films and music videos that defined the era. Behind the scenes, however, as her letter shows, she was one of the young actors who faced intense scrutiny from the entertainment industry.

Yesterday, the 49-year-old actress shared a photo of herself on Instagram when she was 15 years old. In the carousel, she also added snaps of an old letter she wrote her friend, Sabrina, on September 8, 1992.
After some pleasantries, Silverstone mentioned getting a movie role, writing, “Yes I got a movie but it is only 95% sure (or something like that) They want me there on Monday.”
She continued, “They, the movie people, want me to lose 5-10lbs. OK laugh now! Isn’t that such a joke. I can’t lose weight that’s like asking me to kill myself,” she playfully noted. She captioned the photo, “Fifteen-year-old me was funny. And trying to survive.”

While she didn’t specify the title of the movie in the letter, she alluded to it by using the hashtag #TheCrush in her caption. In 1993, Silverstone played lead character Adrian Forrester in the thriller “The Crush,” her breakout movie.

Silverstone had her sights set on making it big in the industry. She began modeling and appeared in commercials in her early years before getting a small role on The Wonder Years in 1992.
The following year, she starred in “The Crush,” the movie that brought her major recognition. It wasn’t easy, however, as she had to be emancipated from her parents at the urging of movie producers.
In an interview with Rolling Stone in 1995, the actress said that she did it for the movie. As a minor, she had limited working hours. “If you’re emancipated, it means you’re legally 18 and can work crazy hours,” she told the outlet.
Silverstone had a good relationship with her parents. They agreed with the emancipation, on the condition that she promise their relationship wouldn’t change.

Afterward, Silverstone rose to stardom, appearing as the “it girl” in Aerosmith music videos and starring in other movies, including “Clueless,” and “Batman & Robin.”

It’s one thing for movie executives to pressure her to lose weight, but the public shaming her to her face was something else entirely. “Batman & Robin” came out in 1997, and she portrayed the role of Batgirl.
Tabloids discussed her weight, and paparazzi chased her while calling her “Fatgirl.” In an interview with The Guardian in 2020, she recalled that moment and said, “They would make fun of my body when I was younger. I knew that it was not right to make fun of someone’s body shape, that doesn’t seem like the right thing to be doing to a human.”
Back then, the actress just walked away from the situation. As she got older, however, she learned to clap back at her shamers. As previously reported by The Blast, Silverstone gave a middle finger on TikTok in response to a photo of her circulating with the caption, “Alicia Silverstone Candid Fat Photo.”

Being under the spotlight and getting scrutinized at such a young age can be difficult, and the actress admitted that she didn’t know how to handle the situation.
“I didn’t have the foundation, the good tools to deal with it, I wasn’t prepared for it in any way, shape, or form. I really had no idea what was happening, and it didn’t feel comfortable,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
She then stepped away from the spotlight and focused on being an activist, flying to places such as Peru and Africa. Moreover, she discovered her passion for writing and has released two books.

It has been three decades since Silverstone starred in “Clueless,” and while there have been talks about a sequel happening, it seems it’s still too early to tell whether it will push forward. As Silverstone told E! News at the Golden Globes red carpet, “We’re not there yet. We are at very baby stages, so there’s not much to say.”
Meanwhile, fans can watch Silverstone on Acorn TV’s “Irish Blood,” a drama series the actress executive produces and stars in.
