I ran into an interesting wrinkle this week. It really opened my mind. I was thinking about people who tell the same stories, over and over, year after year. The same anecdotes. I see this in families, but not mine. The people in my family would not be caught dead, recalling the same happening, over and over again. What is this?
I learned, people do this because the stories are part of their identity. They are reference points in a shared reality. This made total sense. It’s tribal. If you know this story, you were there. The telling of these stories are part of a ritual. Also, these conversations are are low risk and comfortable for all. This seems fine, but then what’s wrong with my family?
At first I thought we were all sort Jupiter Uranus types. Traveling to the new! We don’t want to stay in place, when we can skip ahead! We can also pattern-match. This makes it easy for us to tie the current story to the prior story and the story prior to that. Settler vs explorer mindsets.
But then I realized it was more than that. My families cognitive style is predictive and forward modeling. My sister, being psychic and my getting on the phone with people and telling them what to expect.
Even this legal case. There are numerous recorded calls over the years, where I tell this company, “You won’t get away with this forever… they day will come where you’ll be caught.” I was telling them this, twenty years ago.
Now I understand, I can see these things due to my way natural of thinking. Mercury conjunct Mars in the 9th. Of course my mind can compute the future. Damned interesting!
