So, who exactly is the man beneath the marshmallow? Why the mask? And what does this tell us about fame, privacy, and artistry in an age that loves spilling secrets? Let’s unwrap this mystery together. LEARN MORE

Who remembers the time when Skrillex accidentally revealed the man behind the moniker of Marshmello?

Secret identities in pop music isn’t anything new, after all, Daft Punk spent the majority of their career performing behind two robot masks, while everyone from Slipknot to Sia and Deadmau5 obscured their faces from time to time.

However, this doesn’t stop us from being curious to discover the identities of these mysterious, limelight-shunning musicians.

In the case of DJ and record producer Marshmello, fans didn’t have to wait too long to learn the ‘Happier’ hitmaker’s true identity, as it was revealed for us by Skrillex.

So who is Marshmello – and why does he obscure his identity with a giant smiling marshmallow mask?

Who is Marshmello?

Marshmello has never explicitly come forward and revealed his identity since blowing up back in 2016.

In-fact, he even once spoke against sharing his real name with the world, writing on X back in 2017: “I don’t take my helmet off because I don’t want or need fame. I’m genuinely trying to create something positive for people to connect with.”

However, you could argue that he didn’t have to, as the question about putting a face to the DJ was accidentally revealed by Skrillex before he even reached mainstream consciousness.

During a 2015 interview with Yahoo, the musician – real name Sonny John Moore – receives a phone call from a contact titled ‘Chris Marshmello’. He then answers the call and places him on speaker phone to chat with the interviewer.

From here it didn’t take fans long to deduce that Marshmello was none other than Chris Comstock, who also goes by the stage name Dotcom.

This isn’t the first time which Skrillex has accidentally-on-purpose leaked Marshmello’s identity either, with the DJ sharing a ‘Happy Birthday’ message to his friend on 19 May, which also happens to be Comstock’s birthday (via YourEDM). Oops.

Forbes later confirmed the speculation by tracing Comstock through music rights organisation BMI, revealing that he was credited for several Marshmello hits.

So, while Comstock is unlikely to ever explicitly confirm that he is Marshmello, it’s pretty safe to say that he most likely is.

What is Marshmello up to now?

The record producer is still very active in the music industry, recently releasing tracks ‘Holy Water’ and ‘Better Man Than Me’ with Jelly Roll and Hudson Westbrook respectively.

Comstock also formed a pop-punk band, Underbrook, earlier this year, proving that he is a very busy man indeed.
